McLaren continues to embrace its Italian influence as two significant moves appear to be on the horizon. The first is the official arrival of Luca Colajanni, formerly of Ferrari, while the second could involve a potential opportunity for rising Italian talent Leonardo Fornaroli.
The British team based in Woking is becoming more Italian by the day. After Andrea Stella’s successful promotion to the role of Team Principal, McLaren is preparing to welcome another key Italian figure. Luca Colajanni, a long-time Ferrari communications executive during the Michael Schumacher era, will officially become McLaren’s new Director of Communications starting from the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
The 59-year-old from Rome, a familiar and respected face in the Formula 1 paddock, will replace Sophie Ogg, who left the team after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for personal and logistical reasons. Colajanni brings with him more than thirty years of experience in international motorsport, marking another important step in Andrea Stella’s ongoing project, which increasingly reflects a distinctly Italian influence within McLaren’s structure.
Luca Colajanni’s name is synonymous with Formula 1 communication. He began his career at Ferrari in 1992, serving as communications chief and team spokesperson throughout the team’s dominant years with Michael Schumacher. After leaving Maranello in 2014, he went on to work with Marussia, the FIA, and later Formula 1 itself during Liberty Media’s takeover of the championship. In 2020, he returned to Ferrari as a communications consultant before joining Pirelli, where he worked as Motorsport Media Relations Advisor.
McLaren’s Italian evolution: Colajanni joins as Fornaroli link emerges
According to journalist Thomas Maher from PlanetF1, Colajanni will officially assume his role on Wednesday, October 8, taking full control of the team’s global communications strategy. Although McLaren has not yet issued an official press release, the move is understood to be finalized.
Colajanni’s arrival reinforces an increasingly evident trend within McLaren. Under Andrea Stella’s leadership, the team is gradually integrating more Italian expertise and management philosophy. Beyond Stella himself, several key technical and operational figures within the team also hail from Italy, highlighting a growing synergy between Italian engineering tradition and the British efficiency that has long characterized McLaren’s identity.
Meanwhile, new rumors circulating in the paddock suggest that another Italian addition could soon join McLaren’s structure. Leonardo Fornaroli, currently competing in Formula 2 with the Invicta team and widely recognized as one of Italy’s most promising young drivers, is reportedly being considered for a place within the McLaren Driver Academy. The opportunity comes after the departure of Irish driver Alex Dunne, creating an open spot in the team’s junior program.
If the move were to be confirmed, Fornaroli’s arrival would further solidify McLaren’s growing Italian presence, combining the energy of emerging talent with the experience of established professionals such as Stella and Colajanni.
With Luca Colajanni’s appointment and Fornaroli’s possible addition, the direction of Stella’s project becomes increasingly clear. McLaren is focusing on uniting Italian experience, creativity, and racing passion with the team’s international framework. This combination aims to push both the sporting and corporate sides of the organization to new heights.
As McLaren continues its resurgence in Formula 1, strengthening its leadership both on and off the track, the team’s modern approach — blending technical development with strategic communication — reflects a commitment to long-term success. The addition of figures like Colajanni signals not just a step forward in terms of media management, but also a renewed effort to build a cohesive, forward-looking identity as McLaren prepares for the next phase of its evolution in Formula 1.
