Just moments after stepping off the podium at the 2025 British Grand Prix, disaster struck for the McLaren Formula 1 team as their hard-earned Constructors’ Trophy hit the ground and shattered into pieces. The team, celebrating the brilliant victory achieved by British driver Lando Norris at the historic Silverstone Circuit, was forced to gather the broken pieces of the delicate trophy and attempt to reconstruct it on the spot.
A fan present inside the Formula 1 paddock managed to capture the exact moment on video, which has since started circulating across social media platforms.
For the 75th edition of the British Grand Prix, held at the iconic Silverstone track, the Formula 1 organization partnered with LEGO to create unique, one-of-a-kind trophies for the podium finishers. These special awards were fully built from LEGO bricks, in line with similar collaborations seen previously, such as the full-size LEGO F1 cars displayed at events like the Miami Grand Prix.
The main trophies — one for the race winner and one for the winning constructor — were built from exactly 2,717 LEGO pieces, stood at 59 centimeters in height, and weighed more than 2 kilograms. The trophies for the second and third place finishers were slightly smaller and lighter, but followed the same creative concept.
Unfortunately, McLaren’s Constructors’ Trophy never made it back to the team’s headquarters in Woking. Just as the team exited the podium celebrations, McLaren’s Technical Director Peter Prodromou accidentally dropped the trophy. The LEGO-built structure smashed into hundreds of colorful bricks right in the middle of the paddock. Quickly, two other team members rushed to assist in picking up the scattered pieces.
This is not the first time McLaren has been involved in a podium trophy mishap. At the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, Lando Norris famously slammed his champagne bottle on the top step of the podium in celebration. The impact caused Max Verstappen’s first-place ceramic trophy — a beautifully crafted piece from a Hungarian artisan workshop — to fall and shatter. In that incident, the broken trophy required over six months of painstaking restoration by more than 30 skilled craftsmen.
This year’s incident may have been less tragic thanks to the more repairable nature of LEGO, but it certainly provided another memorable — if accidental — moment in McLaren’s recent podium history.
