Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured the front row for McLaren in the Australian Grand Prix qualifying, with the Briton taking pole position ahead of his teammate. However, despite the dominant performance, Norris warns that the MCL39 remains a difficult car to drive.
A fast but unpredictable McLaren
The Woking team showed impressive performance in Q3, with a three-and-a-half-tenth advantage over the rest of the grid. After making mistakes in the early attempts, both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri managed to recover with a perfect lap at the decisive moment.
“We’ve always had confidence in our chances, but we didn’t expect such a large gap from the rest of the group,” said Lando Norris. “It was difficult to put together the perfect lap, but the speed was there.”
Oscar Piastri shared his teammate’s analysis, emphasizing how the car is fast but sometimes unpredictable: “It’s a car that sometimes isn’t very manageable. The weekend has been tricky at times, but nothing that can’t be fixed.”
A delicate balance between speed and drivability
Norris then explained how McLaren is trying to balance aerodynamic load and drivability in a now established regulatory context: “At this point in the season and with stable regulations, you always try to push the limit. You have to choose whether to increase downforce or improve drivability.”
The Briton admitted that the MCL39 has become faster but also harder to control, leaving the responsibility of managing the limit to the drivers: “You can’t always have a perfect car. The best drivers are the ones who can drive a difficult car and get the most out of it.”
McLaren has therefore found excellent potential with its car, but the real test will come in the race. Will Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri be able to capitalize on this performance in qualifying and defend their front-row double until the checkered flag?
