Andrea Stella explained why McLaren asked Oscar Piastri to give back the position to Lando Norris at Monza
The closing stages of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza were shaped by a pit stop issue for Lando Norris, which led McLaren team principal Andrea Stella to instruct Oscar Piastri to hand the position back to his teammate. The episode sparked plenty of debate among fans on social media and beyond, with some arguing that a different approach should have been taken. However, McLaren preferred to avoid potential tension between the two drivers, continuing a management style that has already produced similar moments in the past.
After the race at Monza, Andrea Stella felt it was important to clarify the reasons behind McLaren’s call. He stated: “It is definitely something we need to discuss. First of all, it has nothing to do with Lando’s retirement at Zandvoort. As a team we prefer to focus on one race at a time, and that is exactly what we did today. When we chose the sequence of pit stops, we decided to bring Oscar in first, but with the awareness that we did not want to switch the positions.”
The McLaren boss continued: “Unfortunately, we had a slow stop and this forced us to make a decision. We felt that the fairest action was to restore the positions to the order they were in before the pit stops. I am sure Oscar has no complaints about this, and we already saw that during the race as he did not protest. This episode highlights once again the spirit of our team and the principles we believe in.”
Andrea Stella’s explanation underlines McLaren’s consistent approach: fairness between its two young drivers and the priority of team unity over short-term controversies. While some fans might have preferred to see the situation play out differently, McLaren’s leadership has shown once more that stability and clear values are at the heart of its current resurgence in Formula 1.
