Zak Brown, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Racing, shared his perspective on how the iconic British team plans to manage the growing competition between their two talented drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
During the Austrian Grand Prix, fans caught a glimpse of what could become a fierce on-track rivalry between Piastri and Norris. Just a few weeks earlier, McLaren Racing’s Sporting Director Andrea Stella had commented that no significant conflict had occurred yet because the two drivers had rarely been close enough on track to engage directly. However, since then, incidents like the collision in Canada and the near-contact at Austria have brought their competitive dynamic into sharper focus. Let’s explore what Zak Brown has to say regarding the evolving situation between McLaren’s two young stars.
On the eve of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, it was the CEO himself who gave insight into the internal team dynamics. Despite McLaren appearing to be on course for another strong Constructors’ Championship campaign, the battle for the Drivers’ Championship remains wide open between Piastri and Norris. The team is keen to avoid internal conflicts reminiscent of past high-profile rivalries, such as the one between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

Addressing the subject of intra-team competition during the customary Friday press conference, Zak Brown touched on various themes, with a particular focus on the management of his drivers and their racing behavior. From this moment forward, fans can expect increased on-track action between the two championship contenders.
Reflecting on the Austrian Grand Prix, Brown said: “It was very exciting. It was a fantastic race. They fought hard, but very cleanly. I think that’s exactly what everyone was eagerly waiting to see: finally, that epic battle. Of course, whenever you have two cars so close, it can be a bit nail-biting, but I think they did a great job, and it was a thrilling race to watch.”
When asked about the personal relationship between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Brown responded: “I think their relationship is fantastic. We’ve spent a lot of time and effort building our team and creating the right chemistry within it, and that starts with the drivers. May the best driver win, and I’m confident they will shake hands and congratulate each other afterward. Obviously, both want to win, but knowing their personalities and the way they race, I don’t see why they can’t remain excellent teammates.”
Despite the risks the drivers have taken in recent races, the feeling is that Norris and Piastri are free to race each other. McLaren’s significant advantage over rival teams allows the British outfit to afford taking a few more risks in this internal duel. Brown emphasized: “The rules are the same. Challenge each other to the maximum, race cleanly, and try to score as many points as possible for the team. Then it’s up to them [the drivers] to decide who gets ahead.”
In a lighthearted moment, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner joked that if Max Verstappen were to leave Red Bull, they would consider recruiting Oscar Piastri. The McLaren CEO swiftly responded: “Our drivers aren’t going anywhere. They’re very happy here, and we’re very happy with them, so there’s no need to look at other drivers on the grid.”
