F1 | McLaren’s Andrea Stella explains internal rules and Norris consequences
McLaren starts the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin amid news of internal “consequences” for Lando Norris due to his opening-lap maneuver at the Singapore GP that affected teammate Oscar Piastri. The details of these consequences remain undisclosed, but Team Principal Andrea Stella spoke to the official Formula 1 website about the situation.
Stella explained the framework behind McLaren’s internal rules, sometimes referred to as the “papaya rules,” emphasizing that the discussions following the Singapore incident were positive and constructive. “There was contact between our cars, so it was necessary to review the matter within the framework we use to race together as a team with Lando and Oscar,” Stella said. “This framework was developed collaboratively by Lando, Oscar, and the team, and ultimately it is my responsibility, along with Zak Brown, to ensure it is applied consistently throughout the season.”
“We reviewed the case and determined that Lando was responsible for the contact because he carried too much speed through turn 3, touched Verstappen, and then oversteered onto Oscar. Of course, there was no malice, but both drivers accepted the review, and now we face the rest of the season stronger and more united. Consequences are part of our reference framework and were agreed upon by both drivers. My role was to ensure this discussion happened. Now we focus on maximizing car performance and returning to the path of victory.”
Stella also highlighted the threat posed by Max Verstappen: “Max is Max, and Red Bull is Red Bull. We know he’s a super champion and the four-time defending world champion, so we’ve never underestimated him. Knowing that, we focus on ourselves. I’m impressed by how Lando and Oscar manage to tune out distractions and focus on extracting their full potential. If they do, they can have strong weekends and control their own destiny in the title fight.”
“The pressure is high because the stakes are enormous. All F1 drivers dream of becoming world champions, and for Oscar and Lando, that dream is within reach. As a team, our priority is to secure first and second in the championship, letting the best driver win. I’m impressed by the maturity both drivers have shown. Our aim is to provide them with a car fast enough to keep Verstappen in check without compromising fairness, sportsmanship, and McLaren values, so that ultimately the best driver wins,” Stella concluded.
