There are always rumors surrounding Max
It’s no secret that during the tumultuous past season at Red Bull, there was a clear rapprochement between the so-called “Verstappen clan” and Mercedes’ Toto Wolff, following their fierce on-track battle in 2021.
The two sides have moved past their differences, even discussing a possible future together, leveraging certain exit clauses in Max Verstappen’s contract that could allow him to switch to another team.
This option was tied to Helmut Marko’s continued presence at Red Bull, but the Austrian advisor renewed his contract, so the Dutch champion stayed with the team. According to recent reports, Max Verstappen’s only exit option now depends on on-track results. The Daily Mail, in an article by Jonathan McEvoy, explained that Max could activate his exit clause for 2026 this summer if he is not at least 3rd in the championship by the August break.
The rumor
German outlet F1-Insider, and specifically journalist Ralf Bach, who is well-informed about Max Verstappen’s affairs, has revealed another intriguing detail: “We’ve learned that the ‘Verstappen clan’ is ready to negotiate with Mercedes. There’s one condition: Mercedes must take the first step. They need to show how important it would be for them to hire Verstappen, even economically.”
In short, Max Verstappen’s entourage is just waiting for a call from Toto Wolff. If that happens, a market scenario recently suggested by the BBC could come to life, with George Russell moving in the opposite direction and becoming Red Bull’s top choice. Yesterday, after the Bahrain GP, there was a moment of tension between Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, and Helmut Marko.
