For the first time in many years, Max Verstappen has received overwhelming support from fans during his thrilling chase of the McLaren team, signaling a shift in perception for the Dutch driver.
The ultimate ‘bad boy’
Throughout his career, Max Verstappen has already achieved incredible success. Yet, he has rarely been a fan favorite. Early in his Formula 1 career, his aggressive driving style, tendency to be involved in controversial incidents, and his unreserved verbal and physical assertiveness — which led to several heated confrontations off-track, particularly with Ferrari and its drivers — earned him the reputation of the grid’s ‘bad boy’.
In 2021, during the epic championship duel with Lewis Hamilton, the Red Bull ace may have gained some fans among those hoping Lewis Hamilton’s winning streak would end. However, the constant controversies of that season polarized opinions, leaving Verstappen disliked by at least half of the audience. Subsequent seasons, especially 2022 and 2023, in which the Hasselt-born driver dominated while leaving rivals in his wake, further fueled opposition, with many fans seeing him as the boring ruler of the Circus.
A new perception
The second half of the 2024 season and especially 2025 have completely changed public perception of Max Verstappen. His performances in a car clearly inferior to the McLaren captivated fans: at many tracks, starting with Monza, boos directed at the Dutch driver turned into cheers, ovations, and applause. The now-famous chant, “Du du du du Max Verstappen,” even echoed at unexpected venues such as Interlagos, where until a few years ago the Red Bull driver was seen solely as Lewis Hamilton’s main rival.
Verstappen himself noticed this shift, commenting on the Red Bull team’s official podcast, Talking Bulls, expressing pleasant surprise at this trend: “So much support for me? It was surprising,” admitted the four-time F1 world champion. “Naturally, when you are the underdog, people tend to root for you more. But I think maybe everyone is finally starting to understand who I really am.”
Being authentic
Another factor that has contributed to Verstappen’s popularity is his decision to expand his horizons beyond Formula 1, competing in various races at the legendary Nordschleife at the Nürburgring. Max’s straightforward personality, which previously caused him some trouble, is now seen as a strength: “I don’t try to be a fake person in the paddock or elsewhere,” Max Verstappen added. “It’s just not in my nature. In F1, when you have a lot of success or are doing well, maybe it’s easy to forget that. That’s why it’s very important to always have the people closest to you who tell you if you’re acting a bit strange or out of the ordinary. I’m very lucky to have a fantastic family and great friends around me.”
As the sport enters its next chapter, the “Verstappen era” seems to be evolving into something more than just statistics and dominance. By showing his human side and his pure passion for racing—even when the car isn’t the fastest on the grid—the Dutchman has managed to do something many thought impossible: he has turned the boos into cheers and the critics into believers.
