Max Verstappen’s future decided? David Coulthard shuts down Mercedes and Aston Martin rumors. David Coulthard believes Max Verstappen will remain at Red Bull.

David Coulthard believes Max Verstappen’s future is firmly with Red Bull

Max Verstappen has once again found himself at the centre of Formula 1 speculation. Between his criticism of the 2026 regulations, the increasing freedom he enjoys outside Formula 1, and a paddock that continues to wonder what his next move might be, rumours about the Dutch driver’s future have continued to grow.

But while theories continue to multiply, David Coulthard sees the situation with remarkable clarity.

According to the former Formula 1 driver, Max Verstappen has already found the perfect environment — one that allows him to be completely himself, race the way he wants, and pursue passions that would likely be off-limits elsewhere. And according to the Scot, it is precisely that freedom which effectively ends any debate about Max Verstappen’s long-term future.

The freedom only Red Bull gives Max Verstappen

In recent months, speculation about a possible Max Verstappen exit has intensified, fuelled in part by his criticism of the 2026 technical regulations.

At the same time, Red Bull has granted him an unusually broad level of freedom for a modern Formula 1 driver. This year alone, Max Verstappen has driven multiple times at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and even took part in the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

According to David Coulthard, no other Formula 1 team would allow that level of flexibility: Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, the former Red Bull driver said:

“As you say that, one thing comes to mind. If we go back a couple of episodes, when we were speculating about Max and asking ourselves, ‘What would he do? What does his future look like?’, you made it very clear to me that Max is not going anywhere. There is no other Formula 1 team that would allow him to be Max.”

He continued: “McLaren would not be able to do it, Ferrari would not be able to do it, Mercedes would not be able to do it, even though he would be driving a Mercedes-powered car. Simply because of the level of investment made in an individual driver. But Red Bull does.”

For David Coulthard, the conclusion is simple: elsewhere Max Verstappen would face limitations, while at Red Bull he remains completely free.

The Mateschitz philosophy and a future already written?

David Coulthard knows the culture of Red Bull well. He ended his Formula 1 career with the team and now serves as one of its ambassadors. He still vividly remembers his first meeting with Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

“In fairness, and in the spirit of Mr Mateschitz, I remember meeting him for the first time before signing to race for the team,” he recalled – “I asked him, ‘What do you expect from me?’ and he replied, ‘Be yourself.’”

According to David Coulthard, that philosophy remains at the heart of Red Bull today, and Max Verstappen represents its purest modern expression: “Max is simply being himself. That is why I am ending the speculation from a couple of weeks ago: right now, Max will stay at Red Bull for the rest of his career.”

Speculation will continue, but the current reality looks clear

Speculation will inevitably continue because Formula 1 thrives on scenarios, uncertainty, and endless possibilities.

But for now, the reality appears far more straightforward. Max Verstappen has found an environment that accepts him without conditions, allows him to race, experiment, and remain true to his personality.

And as long as that freedom remains intact, imagining Max Verstappen anywhere other than Red Bull feels more like a theoretical exercise than a realistic possibility.
