Helmut Marko reveals Max Verstappen was “sad” about his exit – but confirms the Dutchman is staying at Red Bull
Hours after Red Bull officially confirmed Helmut Marko’s departure, Max Verstappen posted a heartfelt tribute on social media that left no doubt about the bond between the two men. Alongside three classic photos – from karting days to title celebrations – the four-time world champion wrote: “Thank you, Helmut. We achieved everything we ever dreamed of together. I will always be grateful for the trust you put in me.”
It was Helmut Marko himself who spotted a raw teenage talent and threw him straight into a Toro Rosso seat at just 17, beating Mercedes to the punch and changing the course of F1 history. Now, in his first interview since the split, the Austrian has lifted the lid on the private conversation where he broke the news to Verstappen.
The moment Marko told Max
“Max was a bit sad,” Helmut Marko admitted to Kleine Zeitung. “We looked back at all the incredible moments we shared. First and foremost his debut win in Barcelona, then the first victory at the Red Bull Ring with Honda power, his maiden world title in 2021, or that rain-soaked masterclass in Brazil. Over the years he has become more and more mature and precise.”
Despite the obvious emotion, Helmut Marko moved quickly to calm speculation about Max Verstappen’s own future. With a contract until 2028 and constant rumours linking him to Mercedes, many wondered if losing his biggest ally would be the final straw.
“No,” Marko said firmly when asked if his exit changes anything for Max. “But Max doesn’t just want to win – he wants to do it in a harmonious environment. If that is no longer the case, he would leave from one day to the next. He is still too young for that sort of thing right now.”
In other words: Max Verstappen is fully committed to Red Bull as long as the team can keep the internal drama under control. The message is crystal clear heading into what promises to be another turbulent winter in Milton Keynes.
For the man who discovered him, mentored him and stood by him through every controversy, Helmut Marko’s final public words on Max Verstappen feel almost like a handover note to the new leadership: keep the atmosphere calm, or risk losing the best driver on the grid.
