Many theories have emerged in recent months. Different cars? Favoritism? A poisoned seat? The CEO of VCARB, Red Bull’s satellite team, has clarified why Max Verstappen is unbeatable by his teammates.
All the drivers who have shared a garage with Max Verstappen have come out of the experience devastated. Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson. These are just some of the names who have worked alongside the Dutchman during his career, and they all have one thing in common: the crisis that results from a lack of success compared to Max.
Peter Bayer, CEO of VCARB, explained the real reason why these drivers have struggled so much. “To be honest, I don’t really agree that it’s a poisoned seat. Look at Checo a couple of years ago, he was vice world champion.”
The Austrian continued, saying that what makes the difference is not the team, the car, or the setup—it’s simply Max Verstappen. “I don’t know any driver as focused on racing and driving as he is. He wakes up thinking about racing. He goes to bed thinking about racing. Or he doesn’t go to bed at all and does simulator races.”
He went on to explain that this is the result of the sacrifices made during Max’s childhood and teenage years. Despite the many criticisms, the teachings of his father Jos gave Max both the on-track speed and mental strength to break down any opponent.
Peter Bayer concluded by saying that the Red Bull car is difficult to drive, and while Max handles it with relative ease, other drivers need time to adapt. “I think that will be Yuki’s challenge. He has openly talked about his difficulty in finding the RB21’s operating window and that, as a result, he’s only scored one points finish in three races.”
