Max Verstappen to McLaren? Ralf Schumacher fuels F1 transfer rumours. Max Verstappen’s McLaren future questioned after Spa hospitality visit.

Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri, 2025 F1

Max Verstappen’s possible move to McLaren has returned to the centre of Formula 1 transfer speculation after members of his entourage were seen inside the team’s hospitality unit at Spa-Francorchamps. Although the meeting officially concerned young driver Dries van Langendonck, Ralf Schumacher believes it may also have provided an opportunity to discuss the four-time world champion’s future.

Max Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but the prospect of him activating an exit clause after the 2026 championship continues to attract considerable attention. Any departure would have major consequences for the leading teams and could trigger a domino effect throughout the F1 driver market.

Could Max Verstappen move to McLaren?

Max Verstappen continues to hold the key to the Formula 1 driver market. Both a move and a decision to remain at Red Bull would influence how the grid takes shape over the coming seasons. Despite his contract running until 2028, an early departure from Red Bull would inevitably affect some of the paddock’s most prominent drivers and teams.

McLaren’s current line-up would be particularly exposed, with Oscar Piastri specifically identified as a driver whose future could be affected. The Woking team would reportedly represent the most likely destination if Max Verstappen decided to activate the clause allowing him to leave Red Bull at the end of the championship.

The possibility of such a move has already generated discussion, with Maurizio Arrivabene recently raising the prospect of Max Verstappen joining McLaren. However, no agreement or formal negotiation has been confirmed.

Verstappen entourage seen in McLaren hospitality at Spa

One detail at Spa-Francorchamps did not go unnoticed. Max Verstappen’s entourage was seen inside McLaren’s hospitality unit during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.

Officially, the meeting concerned Dries van Langendonck, a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme who has been signed by Verstappen Racing. Ralf Schumacher nevertheless suggested that the meeting could also have created an opportunity to discuss the reigning world champion’s future.

The visit attracted further attention because McLaren are continuing to strengthen their wider Formula 1 project, including through a major MCL40 development package for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ralf Schumacher questions purpose of McLaren meeting

“I saw images of manager Raymond Vermeulen — Verstappen’s manager — and Jos in McLaren hospitality at Spa. It will not have been a coincidence; there will undoubtedly have been conversations there,” Ralf Schumacher told Sky Sports Deutschland.

The former Formula 1 driver then added ironically: “They certainly did not stop by just for a coffee, which is apparently better in Red Bull hospitality, or so I am told. I am curious to know what is going on there.”

Ralf Schumacher nevertheless urged caution, stressing that circumstances in Formula 1 can change extremely quickly.

“Formula 1 remains unpredictable. Something happens every weekend. If the car suddenly started producing good results again and the atmosphere became more positive, everything could change in the blink of an eye.”

Why Red Bull could still retain Max Verstappen

One particular combination of circumstances could help Red Bull keep Max Verstappen. McLaren are satisfied with their existing drivers and have demonstrated that they can win with their current line-up. That reduces the urgency to disrupt the partnership, even if a driver of Max Verstappen’s calibre would represent an undeniable addition.

A detailed assessment of the reigning world champion’s options has similarly examined the likelihood of Max Verstappen joining McLaren or remaining with Red Bull.

Mercedes are in a different position compared with one year ago. With a car considered superior to the rest of the field, the team now holds the stronger hand and does not face an immediate need to secure another leading driver.

Max Verstappen would clearly be attractive to any team and would provide substantial added value. However, neither McLaren nor Mercedes currently appears to be facing an emergency that would force it to pursue such a high-profile and potentially disruptive signing.

Red Bull must still consider what its future could look like without the Dutch driver. The team already has another potential leadership option emerging, with Isack Hadjar developing into a possible long-term successor if Max Verstappen eventually chooses to continue his career elsewhere.

For now, the McLaren hospitality visit is another intriguing detail rather than confirmation of an impending transfer. As Ralf Schumacher acknowledged, Red Bull’s performance and internal atmosphere could still change the situation rapidly, leaving Max Verstappen’s decision at the heart of Formula 1’s evolving driver market.
