A promise is a promise, especially in the Formula 1 paddock. Max Verstappen has kept his word to Sergio Perez, completing a symbolic exchange that says more than a thousand statements about the relationship between the two former teammates.
A gesture that closes the circle
During the Austrian Grand Prix press conference, the four-time world champion was asked about an interview given by Sergio Perez regarding the 2022 season. Max Verstappen made it clear that the Mexican driver’s words had been misunderstood and once again underlined the mutual respect that exists between the two.
At the time, Verstappen said:
“I have a lot of respect for him, and he has a lot of respect for me. From my side, that’s everything. I hope to see him back in the paddock soon. I still have to give him one of my helmets, I promised him, because he gave me one of his with a very nice message written on it. I promised I would give it to him, hopefully in Mexico. So from my side, regardless of what the media write, I know what Checo is like and we have a great relationship.”
In the end, that promise was fulfilled. In the end-of-year recap published by Sergio Perez on Instagram, one photo shows the orange helmet he received from Max Verstappen, a gift that completes the exchange that began months earlier.
On the visor, the Dutch driver wrote: “Thank you for being a great teammate and friend.”
In a sport often defined by tension and fierce rivalries, Max Verstappen’s gesture towards Sergio Perez stands out as a rare moment of authenticity. A helmet, a message and a promise kept: small symbols that tell the story of a relationship built on respect, beyond media narratives.
As the two drivers move into different phases of their careers, this exchange serves as a definitive closing chapter to their time as partners at Red Bull. While the record books will focus on the championships and trophies they secured together, this personal tribute highlights the human side of the sport. It proves that even in the most ruthless competition in the world, the bonds formed in the heat of battle can result in a lasting friendship that transcends the finish line.
