Max Verstappen reveals frustration as Spa 24 Hours dream blocked by F1 calendar. Verstappen targets GT racing ambitions but admits Spa 24 Hours is impossible for now.

Verstappen looks beyond F1: the 24 Hours of Spa remains a postponed dream

In an increasingly suffocating Formula 1 calendar, where every free slot seems to disappear and every weekend is locked in months in advance, there is one driver who continues to look beyond the boundaries of the World Championship. Max Verstappen, who on track appears unshakable and programmed to win, reveals a different side away from the cockpit: the restlessness of someone who wants to race more, elsewhere, in environments where the noise is different and the challenge feels more raw. His words, spoken almost in passing, open a window onto a desire that keeps resurfacing cyclically, only to be blocked again by the calendar. A silent tension that says far more than it seems.

A champion seeking space beyond Formula 1

Max Verstappen’s desire to race outside Formula 1 is not new, but in recent months it has become increasingly concrete. The Dutch driver had expressed his wish to take part in the 24 Hours of Spa, one of the flagship events of the GT World Challenge, if only the calendar had allowed it.

The April break saw him competing in the Nürburgring Qualifiers, the prelude to the legendary 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. It was an intense weekend, marked by the death of 66-year-old Juha Miettinen and a race in which Verstappen ultimately lost out on victory due to technical issues with his Mercedes-AMG GT3.

In Miami, during media day, Max admitted what many already suspected: he would like to race far more outside Formula 1, but the current schedule makes it almost impossible.

“If there had been a free weekend for the 24 Hours of Spa, I would have already done it this year,” he explained.

A simple sentence, but one that reveals a growing conflict: between the driver who dominates Formula 1 and the man who wants to explore other worlds of motorsport.

A calendar that closes doors and a desire that stays open

The clash with the Austrian Grand Prix — the tenth round of the World Championship — makes participation in the Belgian endurance race impossible. Spa and Spielberg fall on the same late-June weekend, and Formula 1, with its rhythm and demands, leaves no flexibility.

Verstappen knows it, and says it without hesitation:

“Obviously I would like to do more, but it depends on the calendar.”

This is a recurring theme whenever he talks about his future: the desire to race elsewhere, to compete in endurance events, to experience motorsport in a freer form, less constrained by structure and scheduling. And every time the calendar shuts a door, the feeling is that his curiosity only grows stronger rather than fading away.

The 24 Hours of Spa remains a postponed dream. But not a cancelled one. And knowing Verstappen, it is only a matter of time before he finds a way through—or decides to create one himself.
