Just over 12 months ago, Max Verstappen became a father for the first time. His partner, Kelly Piquet, gave birth to a baby girl named Lily, and the family recently used the short break in the Formula 1 calendar to celebrate her first birthday. While social media has already started joking about the possibility of another Verstappen eventually reaching Formula 1, the Dutch champion has made it clear that he has no intention of pushing his daughter into the world of motorsport.
“The biggest lesson I want to leave her is to be herself. As far as I’m concerned, she is completely free to decide for herself what she wants to do in the future. There are many parents who push their children too hard and try to guide them in a specific direction, but I don’t want to do that. I think you can introduce a child to certain sports, but in the end, it will be her decision,” the new father told De Telegraaf.
Whenever his daughter is mentioned, Max Verstappen’s expression noticeably changes, with the usually ice-cold racing persona giving way to words filled with warmth and affection. And although he is still young, the Dutch driver already appears to have a clear view of what could eventually bring his Formula 1 career to an end: the moment it becomes too difficult to keep leaving home week after week.
“I still remember what it was like when my father left for Formula 1 races. Sometimes he would literally leave secretly through the back door, and I would start crying. My father obviously found that very difficult too. But that’s part of the game,” he added while speaking to journalist Erik Van Haren.
Even now, Max Verstappen’s routine has already started to change. The 28-year-old has reduced some of his trackside commitments and is spending more time with his family, recognising that life extends beyond the race circuit. As he reflected, “Sometimes you have to stop and think that not everyone will be with us forever.”
In conclusion, Max Verstappen’s heartwarming reflections on fatherhood offer a rare and fascinating glimpse behind the relentless drive of a multi-time world champion. While his on-track persona is defined by an unyielding pursuit of perfection, his approach to raising his daughter Lily reveals a deeply grounded, empathetic individual who values personal freedom over inherited legacy. By explicitly drawing from his own childhood memories of his father Jos, Max highlights an acute awareness of the sacrifices demanded by the relentless F1 calendar. As the sports’ demanding schedules continue to expand, Verstappen’s unwavering commitment to his family dynamics underscores that his eventual departure from the paddock will be dictated not by a loss of speed, but by the conscious choice to prioritize the moments that truly matter most.
