Tragedy at the Ring
It was supposed to be a weekend of celebration for Max Verstappen and for all motorsport fans at the Nürburgring. Instead, it turned into tragedy following the death of 66-year-old driver Juha Miettinen, who passed away after a devastating crash involving six other cars during the second lap of the first of the two NLS Qualifiers races.
The race was naturally red-flagged and subsequently cancelled. However, track action is set to resume today with race two, scheduled to start at 13:00. Verstappen and his team will take part as planned, but the four-time Formula 1 world champion was deeply affected by the events that unfolded the previous evening.
Through social media, the Dutch driver shared a message of condolence following Miettinen’s passing, expressing his shock at what had happened: “I am shocked by what happened today,” Verstappen wrote on Instagram late last night. “Motorsport is something we all love, but moments like this remind us how dangerous it can be. My heartfelt condolences go out to Juha’s family and loved ones.”
As a mark of respect, all cars will run with mourning decals during today’s race.
In summary, the tragic loss of Juha Miettinen has cast a shadow over the Nürburgring weekend, reminding the racing world of the inherent risks involved in the sport. Max Verstappen’s tribute reflects the collective sorrow of the paddock as teams prepare to resume racing with a heavy heart.
