Max Verstappen has explained why he chose to extend his relationship with Red Bull despite one of the most difficult seasons the partnership has faced. With the RB22 struggling to match Formula 1’s leading cars in 2026, the four-time world champion says leaving simply to chase the fastest machinery would not fit his character: in his words, “you can’t be the captain of the ship” and abandon it as soon as something goes wrong.
The sweeping 2026 regulation changes and the resulting shift in Formula 1’s competitive order have created a complicated campaign for both Red Bull and its star driver. While the new Red Bull Powertrains unit has delivered encouraging results and Max Verstappen has continued to maximise opportunities for valuable podiums and points, the overall package remains some distance from the benchmark.

The other side of Red Bull’s season has been defined by an RB22 that has exposed significant weaknesses, the frustration surrounding the ADUO regulations and power-unit performance, and Verstappen’s difficult relationship with Formula 1’s new technical rules.
At one stage, his dissatisfaction with the new generation of cars appeared serious enough to raise questions about whether he might ultimately walk away from Formula 1 altogether.
However, around the Dutch Grand Prix, the four-time world champion renewed his commitment to the Anglo-Austrian organisation by signing a lucrative two-year extension to his Red Bull contract.
Why Verstappen chose to extend his Red Bull contract
Asked in a recent BBC interview what convinced him to remain with the Milton Keynes team, Max Verstappen described staying as the best possible decision for him, with his sense of belonging at Red Bull playing an important role.
“My decision also came down to the fact that I need to feel good within a team, and this is like a second family to me. Also, for me, there isn’t only Formula 1. There are many things I will be doing next year that Red Bull is also involved in. So, for me, this is the right place to be.”
The decision also ends another period of speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future, although the terms of his agreement remain significant given that his Red Bull contract retains performance-related exit clauses.
Verstappen embraces a bigger leadership role at Red Bull
The Dutchman did not hide the concerns that existed on both sides while the decision was being made. Red Bull was worried that Verstappen could leave, while the driver himself was concerned by the team’s competitive situation. Even so, he says he never felt a strong need to take a completely different path.
“They were worried that I might leave and I was worried about what was happening, but I always told them not to focus on convincing me to stay, but to concentrate on improving the car because the faster the car is, the easier the decision becomes.
“I don’t need to prove, in another car, that I can win. It’s easy to run towards the fastest car and start everything again. But that’s not the way I am. You can’t be the captain of the ship and, as soon as something doesn’t work, jump off the ship.”
That attitude suggests Verstappen is embracing a broader role within the team with which he built one of Formula 1’s most successful recent periods, winning four Drivers’ Championships. During the dominant years, Red Bull rarely needed its leading driver to help guide the organisation through prolonged competitive adversity.
Now the situation is different. The RB22 requires improvement, the competitive order has shifted and Red Bull must rebuild if it wants to return to the front consistently. Verstappen appears willing to make that challenge part of his own responsibility rather than simply looking elsewhere for a quicker route back to victories.
It is a different dimension of leadership for Max Verstappen: not merely extracting everything from the car on race weekends, but remaining at the centre of the project when results become harder to achieve. After four world titles together, his decision is to stay aboard the ship and help Red Bull steer it back towards the front.
