Max Verstappen, Esteban Ocon and Cadillac at the centre of F1 transfer speculation. The 2026 Formula 1 driver market is already heating up.

Although the 2026 Formula 1 season is still in its early stages, with only five Grands Prix completed so far, the driver market is already generating plenty of discussion across the paddock. The biggest talking point remains the future of Max Verstappen, whose long-term position at Red Bull appears increasingly uncertain amid ongoing speculation about both the team’s competitiveness and the departures of several key technical figures in recent years.

During the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in Montreal, attention was drawn to a meeting between Max Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. The sighting immediately reignited rumours linking the four-time Formula 1 World Champion with a move to the Brackley-based team. It is far from the first time that Verstappen has been connected with Mercedes, and the latest developments have only added fuel to the speculation.

Alongside Mercedes, Ferrari continues to be mentioned as a potential destination for the Dutch driver. However, such a move currently appears difficult to imagine, with both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc seemingly committed to remaining at Maranello beyond the current campaign. Lewis Hamilton, in particular, reiterated his desire to continue his Ferrari journey during the most recent race weekend.

“I still have another year on my contract and I’m motivated. A lot of people are trying to make me retire, but I’m already thinking about what lies ahead and planning the next five years. I hope to stay at Ferrari for a long time.” — Lewis Hamilton, Canadian Grand Prix 2026 press conference

Since the beginning of the season, Max Verstappen has repeatedly voiced concerns about Formula 1’s new technical regulations and has called for significant changes moving forward. Should no meaningful adjustments be introduced, the Red Bull driver has on several occasions hinted at the possibility of stepping away from Formula 1, at least temporarily. Such a decision would undoubtedly trigger a major chain reaction throughout the driver market.

Another story that emerged during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend involved Esteban Ocon. Following a disappointing start to the season, rumours surfaced suggesting the Frenchman could part ways with Haas earlier than expected. Ocon, however, quickly dismissed reports of tensions with team principal Ayao Komatsu and insisted that his relationship with the team remains strong.

The French driver also made it clear that his seat is not under threat for the remainder of the season, attempting to put an end to speculation surrounding his immediate future.

Despite being a newcomer to Formula 1, Cadillac is already facing questions regarding its driver lineup. Valtteri Bottas has reportedly come under scrutiny after the opening five races, with his performances being viewed as underwhelming compared to teammate Sergio Perez. According to rumours circulating in Montreal, Cadillac could even consider making a driver change during the season if results fail to improve.

The leading candidate to replace Valtteri Bottas is believed to be Colton Herta. The American driver is currently competing with Hitech in Formula 2 during his first full season in Europe and is reportedly only a few points away from securing the Super Licence required to compete in Formula 1.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez appears to have quickly rebuilt his reputation following his return to Formula 1 after a year away from the grid. Reports suggest that several rival teams have already made enquiries regarding the Mexican driver’s availability. Cadillac, however, would be determined to keep hold of one of its key assets as it continues building its long-term Formula 1 project.

With 15 of the 22 drivers on the current Formula 1 grid set to see their contracts expire at the end of the year, the 2026 driver market is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory. As the season progresses, major announcements and unexpected moves could arrive at virtually any moment.
