With the first GP over, it’s already time for the second. Formula 1 doesn’t stop and now moves to the well-known Shanghai circuit. We will quickly see a response to what happened in Melbourne: will performances be confirmed, or will the grid be reshuffled due to the different track characteristics? Meanwhile, Max Verstappen has addressed Red Bull’s main issue and arrives in China with confidence.
Verstappen was undoubtedly the best at Albert Park. Despite failing to take first place from Lando Norris, the Dutch driver showcased the true value of his four world titles. With a significantly weaker car—on paper, even behind Ferrari—he still managed to challenge both McLarens throughout the race.
His first display of skill came at the start and on the opening lap. Starting from third in dreadful weather conditions, Max Verstappen found the gap once again by identifying the grippiest racing line, allowing him to overtake Oscar Piastri. From there, he put pressure on Lando Norris for most of the race.
However, pushing every braking zone and corner to the limit, Max Verstappen made a mistake that cost him a position. This setback was mitigated by an excellent strategy from both the driver and Red Bull. At the checkered flag, Max Verstappen crossed the line just behind McLaren’s number 4 car.
As the Chinese GP approaches, Max Verstappen has revisited the main issue encountered in Melbourne. “The team has learned a lot, and in the end, I was very happy with second place, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. One of the problems we faced in Melbourne was definitely tire degradation. We should have found a way to improve that.”
Looking ahead to the second race, Max Verstappen remains optimistic. “It’s the first sprint weekend of the season, so we need to make sure we have the best possible car setup and score as many points as possible. We don’t have much time to make changes, especially with just one practice session.”
“The team is working well and hard to improve. I’ve always enjoyed racing in Shanghai: there are plenty of overtaking opportunities, and the circuit has a unique layout. We’ll see what the weekend brings.”
