Despite a tough outing in Mexico City last weekend, Max Verstappen has no intention of waving the white flag and is preparing his counteroffensive for the Brazilian Gran Prix. The Dutchman, penalized twice during the race for pushing Lando Norris off the track at turns 4 and 7, can still rest easy with a 47-point lead over the McLaren driver, although the gap is narrowing with each race.
However, with a second grid penalty looming due to the replacement of his fifth power unit, the three-time world champion will likely struggle to gain points over his direct championship rival, especially given the technical crisis of the RB20, now a far cry from the car that dominated eight of the first ten races of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Max Verstappen ready for the Interlagos challenge
For Max Verstappen and Red Bull, the goal is to minimize the damage as much as possible, hoping once again for an unexpected ally in Ferrari, which could steal key points from Lando Norris.
“We have to do everything we can to be more competitive and come back stronger,” said the thee-time Formula 1 world champion on the eve of the Interlagos weekend. Mexico was a race to forget, but we know we can do better, and we are working hard to understand what went wrong and improve our form for the final races.” – he pointed out.
“We need to do everything we can to be more competitive and return stronger at a place where we know we can be. Brazil is the last of a long string of three races and, of course, another Sprint weekend, so it will be very challenging but also an opportunity to gain points. Interlagos is a great track to drive, with lots of history, and it’s also quite technical with all the elevation changes. I can’t wait to return to Brazil and race in front of its passionate fans.” – Max Verstappen concluded ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.
