Max Verstappen blasts Red Bull radio failures after Austin GP: “It’s a disaster”

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB22, 2026 F1

Max Verstappen has lost patience with Red Bull’s recurring radio communication problems after another frustrating weekend at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The four-time Formula 1 World Champion described the situation as a “disaster” and sarcastically suggested that communicating through hand signals might be cheaper, after technical failures once again disrupted contact between the driver and his race engineer at Austin.

The Dutch driver finished third at the Circuit of the Americas in a race where he had initially appeared capable of challenging for victory. However, disagreements over the team’s strategy, several problems with the RB22 and further radio difficulties complicated his afternoon. The communication issues were particularly frustrating because similar problems had already affected Red Bull at the previous race in Singapore.

Max Verstappen frustrated by repeated Red Bull radio failures at Austin

The United States Grand Prix proved to be a difficult afternoon for Max Verstappen, with several misunderstandings between the driver and the Red Bull pit wall adding to his frustration. Although he secured another podium finish, the Dutchman was unhappy with the team’s strategic decisions and reported a number of problems with his car.

Among those difficulties was another failure of the radio communication system, which prevented messages from being transmitted reliably between the cockpit and the garage. It was the second consecutive Grand Prix in which Red Bull had encountered significant communication problems, although Max Verstappen made clear that the issue had appeared on several other occasions during the season.

At the Singapore Grand Prix, race engineer Giampiero Lambiase had been unable to receive radio messages from Max Verstappen. The same problem resurfaced in Texas, this time affecting his new race engineer, Tom Hart.

The repeated failures have become an additional complication for Red Bull as the team attempts to maximise the performance of its improved RB22. Reliable communication is particularly important during a race, when drivers and engineers need to exchange information about strategy, car behaviour and changing track conditions.

Max Verstappen jokes Red Bull should use hand signals instead

Speaking during the post-race press conference at Austin, Max Verstappen made no attempt to conceal his irritation. Asked about the radio problems, the Red Bull driver immediately corrected the suggestion that they had occurred only twice, explaining that similar failures had happened repeatedly throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season.

“Is this the second time we’ve had this problem? No, it’s not the second time,” Max Verstappen clarified. “It’s already happened I don’t even know how many other times this year.”

The Dutchman then used his characteristic sarcasm to underline just how frustrated he had become with the ongoing technical problems.

“Maybe we should start communicating with hand signals. It would probably be cheaper as well. It’s a disaster. Yes, it’s a disaster. To be honest, it’s really frustrating.”

Although the suggestion was clearly made in jest, the comments illustrated how seriously Max Verstappen views the communication failures. What might initially appear to be a relatively minor technical inconvenience has become a recurring source of frustration for the four-time world champion.

Red Bull faces more work before the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix

The radio problems added to an already complicated United States Grand Prix for Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver was dissatisfied with aspects of the team’s strategy and encountered several difficulties with his RB22 before eventually finishing third.

Despite his podium result, the gap between expectations and the outcome at Austin left the Dutchman with plenty of concerns. The team’s improved competitiveness had raised hopes of a victory challenge, but the race ultimately exposed further areas in which Red Bull still needs to improve.

The recurring communication failures represent another problem to address as the team prepares for the next round of the championship. With the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix weekend approaching, Red Bull has limited time to investigate the causes and attempt to restore reliable contact between Max Verstappen and the pit wall.

For the Dutchman, the priority is clear. After encountering radio difficulties in Singapore and Austin, he wants Red Bull to find a solution to a problem that has occurred far too frequently throughout the season.

His sarcastic suggestion about using hand signals may have provided a moment of humour during the press conference, but the underlying message was unmistakable: Max Verstappen expects better communication from Red Bull as the team attempts to finish the 2026 Formula 1 season strongly.
