The world of motorsport is vast. Many see Formula 1 as the only championship, the ultimate and sole goal to achieve. However, since the top tier of motorsport is limited to just twenty drivers, the paths to follow are endless. On this topic, reigning world champion Max Verstappen has once again spoken about his alternatives to F1, making no secret of his wish to race with Fernando Alonso.
By now, it is well known. Rumors—some more credible than others—have long circulated that the young Dutch Red Bull driver is growing tired of single-seaters. Given how often he trains on endurance simulators and his remarks in various interviews, it is clear to everyone that GT racing is another passion of the world’s number one driver.
Max Verstappen does not want to limit himself to Formula 1. He wants to compete in other equally prestigious championships and perhaps claim the so-called “Triple Crown,” a purely statistical recognition awarded to a driver who wins the Monaco GP, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Indianapolis 500.
Having already achieved the first goal by winning in 2021 and 2023, Max Verstappen is now aiming for the others, with the most prestigious race of the WEC championship as his primary target. However, in an interview with the British newspaper *The Mirror*, he did not hide his desire to share this experience with a direct rival: Fernando Alonso.
The Spanish driver, as many will recall, came close to accomplishing the triple victory. He won the Monaco Grand Prix and, after leaving F1 in 2018, attempted the other two iconic races. In 2019, he participated in the Indianapolis 500 but was forced to retire due to an engine failure while running in the leading positions.
In 2018 and 2019, while competing in the WEC championship, he won both editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “We have talked about it many times, and it’s on our minds—we both know it and want to do it,” Max Verstappen said. “I also asked my father, who is still very fast, but he doesn’t want to do it.”
“There are many drivers and friends I could choose from, but Fernando told me he would only do it with me. The only problem is that Le Mans has a minimum driver weight requirement, and I’m quite heavy. Fernando, unlike me, is much lighter. We would still need another driver, so I’ll have a look around. One driver I would like to have on my team is Nyck de Vries.” – the four-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
