The fourth Formula 1 world title is within reach and could be secured this weekend. However, things didn’t get off to a great start for Max Verstappen in Las Vegas. The Dutch driver finished Friday in 17th place, about two seconds behind the fastest time set by Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
The truth is, the three-time world champion didn’t complete a proper time attack, unlike the drivers who finished in the top positions. Max Verstappen admitted that the extremely low temperatures encountered in Nevada (11°C for the air and 13°C for the track) were making it difficult for the RB20 on a single lap.
“I think we are really struggling to make the tires work, especially on the single lap. On the long run, we were a bit more competitive, but even there we need to fine-tune some things,” the Dutch driver said in the usual post-session interviews at the end of the second free practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“Yeah, in terms of lap speed, we are quite far off. Sure, the conditions here are unique, it’s very cold, but in the end, it’s the same for everyone. So, we need to figure out what we’re doing wrong right now,” he added.
At least, when asked if he already had any ideas about the setup to pursue, Max Verstappen seemed to have a clear picture in his mind.
“Yes. I mean, for me, it’s a tire issue. The car balance isn’t that bad. I think it’s just that we don’t have grip. Right now, I’m driving like I’m on ice,” said the Milton Keynes-based team’s driver, who, if he wants to celebrate his fourth title in the U.S., will need to leave Las Vegas with at least a 60-point lead over Lando Norris, currently second. This means he can afford to lose up to two of the 62 points he currently holds as a margin.
