It wasn’t an easy qualifying session for Red Bull at the Bahrain GP. After complaining about issues with his car’s balance, which led him to make several mistakes during his fast lap attempts, Max Verstappen could only secure seventh place on the grid. A tough session for his new teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, too, who will start from tenth after struggling to find the right rhythm throughout the qualifying.
It was a great day, however, for Oscar Piastri, who, behind the wheel of his McLaren, took a surprising pole position, confirming the excellent form of the Woking team. In contrast, his teammate Lando Norris had a lackluster qualifying, starting from sixth, just ahead of Max Verstappen.
The race is shaping up to be very interesting, with several big names forced to fight their way up the grid and an unpredictable balance yet to be deciphered on a track that could hold many surprises.
Max Verstappen’s statements
In an interview with Mara Sangiorgio, Max Verstappen described what seems to be a dramatic situation for Red Bull:
“It’s been a tough weekend overall. We have several issues: we don’t have pace, we don’t have balance, we’re struggling with the brakes, and in general, I didn’t have good feelings. It’s been hard, and I tried to make the most of what I had. Overall, we’re a bit off, but I will still try to do my best, and we need to analyze what we can do to improve.” – he pointed out.
When asked if he expected McLaren to be more dominant in Bahrain, the Red Bull driver responded: “It’s impossible to say. They’re still first, and that’s what counts in the end.” He concluded by highlighting the tough conditions drivers faced during qualifying: “I think the conditions were very difficult for everyone today: there was very little grip, and the track was very slippery.”
