Kimi Antonelli’s first Saturday of the Formula 1 season began in the worst possible way, but an unexpected twist eventually allowed the young Italian driver to take part in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes rookie from Bologna had feared that his weekend at the Albert Park circuit might effectively end before qualifying even began. However, a dramatic crash involving Max Verstappen in Q1 unexpectedly changed the situation and gave Antonelli the opportunity to return to the track.

Mercedes mechanics race against time

Antonelli’s problems began earlier in the day during the third free practice session in Melbourne. The 19-year-old driver lost control of his Mercedes W17 shortly after the first chicane and crashed heavily into the barriers, bringing his session to an abrupt end.

The incident caused significant damage to the car and immediately raised doubts about whether the Mercedes mechanics would be able to complete the necessary repairs in time for qualifying. Inside the garage, the team worked intensely in an attempt to rebuild the car and get Antonelli back on track.

Despite their efforts, it initially appeared that the team would not succeed in finishing the repairs before the start of the qualifying session. As the minutes passed, hopes of seeing the Italian driver participate in the session seemed to fade.

Verstappen crash changes everything

The turning point came during the opening phase of Q1, when Max Verstappen crashed heavily at Turn 1. The Red Bull driver lost control of his car after a rear axle issue and slammed into the barriers, triggering an immediate red flag.

The interruption lasted for roughly ten minutes, providing the Mercedes crew with valuable additional time inside the garage. That unexpected window proved crucial, allowing the mechanics to complete the final repairs on Antonelli’s W17.

Thanks to the red flag period caused by Verstappen’s accident, the Mercedes team was ultimately able to send the young Italian driver out onto the circuit to participate in the qualifying session.

Antonelli responds with a clean lap

Once the immediate danger of missing qualifying had passed, Antonelli managed to regain his focus quickly. The Italian driver delivered a clean and controlled lap during Q1, successfully advancing to the second phase of qualifying without major difficulties.

It was a remarkable turnaround considering the dramatic sequence of events that had unfolded earlier in the day. Only a few hours before, the rookie driver had been dealing with the disappointment of a heavy crash and the possibility of missing the session entirely.

Now, thanks in part to Verstappen’s misfortune, Antonelli finds himself with the chance to fight for a strong grid position. The battle for pole position currently appears to favor his Mercedes teammate George Russell, but the unpredictable nature of qualifying still leaves plenty of possibilities open as the session continues.
