Liam Lawson did not hold back after the Mexican Grand Prix, directing strong criticism at Carlos Sainz for the collision that occurred at Turn 1. According to the New Zealand driver, the Williams competitor “killed” his race by making contact in the opening moments at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Lawson furious: “There needs to be more awareness!”
After the race, Lawson explained his version of the incident with Carlos Sainz: “We had a great launch off the line and there was plenty of room on the outside. I left a good margin next to Carlos, but I think he decided to cut across the chicane without looking to his left, and I was right there. He destroyed the side of my car, broke my front wing, and basically killed our race. We were about three seconds per lap slower after the impact.”
Although he acknowledged that the first lap can often be chaotic, Liam Lawson insisted that drivers must remain fully aware of those around them: “I understand that Turn 1 on the first lap is always tricky, but we’re all there to fight — you can’t just cut across and look the other way. There needs to be more awareness.”
Liam Lawson forced to retire
Liam Lawson later clarified that he did not believe Carlos Sainz had hit him on purpose: “I don’t think he meant to hit me — it’s one of those situations that can happen. But the force of the impact was such that it completely destroyed the side of my car.”
After the crash, the Racing Bulls driver was forced to return to the pits for repairs and eventually retire from the race due to the extensive damage. However, that was not the only dramatic moment of Liam Lawson’s Mexican Grand Prix — during the race, he also narrowly avoided hitting two track marshals who were on the circuit.
