Liam Lawson is gearing up for his debut with Racing Bulls this weekend when Formula 1 is back for the 19th round of the season, the United States Grand Prix, which is set to take place at the 5.513-kilometre Circuit of The Americas in Austin on Sunday, October 20. The young New Zealander is replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the remaining six races of the current championship. And it will be a very challenging final quarter of the season for him as at stake is not only a seat for next year but also the possibility of dreaming about a spot at Red Bull.
Racing Bulls CEO Peter Bayer highlighted a key factor that led him to choose Liam Lawson. “It’s about growth, learning that patience can be a virtue, even if we don’t like it,” he said in an exclusive interview with RacingNews365.
“He’s doing everything right, and it’s fantastic for us to see a young driver taking this responsibility very seriously without making mistakes,” Bayer said, praising Lawson’s qualities. “You have to maintain focus, which is crucial in this environment, and he’s very good at that.”
There has been much talk about Liam Lawson’s future in Formula 1. Some believe that the last six races will be decisive, and it could be a head-to-head battle between him and Yuki Tsunoda for a seat at Red Bull next year. Sergio Pérez already has a contract for 2025, with the possibility of extending it to 2026. However, there are no guarantees, and this year Checo is feeling the pressure at Red Bull, which is 41 points behind McLaren.
After last year, Bayer noticed how Liam Lawson deserved a second chance. “He was impressive. He received a lot of information from the race engineers, absorbed it, and retained it. There was no need to repeat anything.” Liam Lawson has slowly built his path, which is why the CEO believes he has potential: “Of course, otherwise he wouldn’t be here.” – he confirmed.
