In Monaco, Liam Lawson once again found himself answering questions about his future. It is a future that continues to remain uncertain despite a strong season and several valuable points scored for Racing Bulls.
The New Zealander’s comments were honest and revealing, highlighting just how little control he has over the decisions that will ultimately shape his Formula 1 career. While he continues to deliver results on track, his prospects beyond the current campaign remain in the hands of others.
A strong present, an unclear future
During Thursday’s media sessions in the Principality, Lawson appeared calm and composed, showing the attitude of a driver who has learned to live with uncertainty. At the same time, he spoke with the confidence of someone who knows he has done everything possible to strengthen his case.
His 2026 season with Racing Bulls has been one of the strongest of his Formula 1 career so far. Consistent performances and important points finishes have made him one of the team’s key reference points. Yet when the discussion turned to 2027, Lawson admitted that the situation remains completely open.
“No, it’s definitely too early to talk about that right now,” he said, trying to keep the mood light while hinting at the frustration of someone who would prefer greater clarity The goal is to maintain the consistency that we have shown during the first part of the season.”
It was a cautious response, but one that also reflected how little influence he currently has over the bigger decisions regarding his future.
Last year, Lawson had to wait until the very last moment to discover what his future held. When it was suggested that he would probably prefer to avoid another long period of uncertainty, the Racing Bulls driver responded with a brief laugh: “That’s not my choice!”
He then added with notable honesty:
“If it were my decision, I would sign a contract for next year immediately, but it seems that the focus is mainly on maintaining consistency.”
The value of consistency and the burden of waiting
Lawson’s situation is something of a paradox. He has established himself as one of the most convincing young drivers on the grid, proving that he can score points, continue improving and handle pressure. Yet his future remains suspended in a state of uncertainty that appears largely unrelated to his performances.
The Red Bull driver programme continues to operate according to its own timelines, leaving Lawson with only one option: continue doing exactly what he has been doing all season — driving well, driving fast and delivering results whenever the opportunity arises.
His calm approach should not be mistaken for resignation. Lawson does not complain, point fingers or create unnecessary controversy. Instead, he simply describes the reality of the situation.
Even in his measured comments, however, there is a clear desire for stability, for a defined path forward and for recognition that extends beyond the immediate future. Despite the uncertainty surrounding him, he has managed to maintain an impressive sense of balance, almost as if he has accepted that the best way to influence his future is through consistent performances on track.
In Monaco, Lawson did not receive any definitive answers about what comes next. What he did show once again was the quality that perhaps defines him more than any other: the ability to remain composed and focused while everything around him remains uncertain.
His future may still be unresolved, but his present speaks for itself. And if 2027 has yet to be written, it is difficult to imagine a driver delivering performances of this level being left without a seat once the key decisions are finally made. For now, consistency remains the priority. And perhaps, for Liam Lawson, that consistency will ultimately be the key to turning a period of waiting into a major career opportunity.
