Leonardo Fornaroli completed another positive Formula 1 practice appearance during the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, finishing FP1 at the Hungaroring in 16th position and less than nine tenths behind Lando Norris. More important than the stopwatch, however, were the work carried out to validate McLaren’s latest MCL40 upgrades and the additional kilometres accumulated by the Italian driver.
The experience could become an important asset for Leonardo Fornaroli as he attempts to secure a full-time Formula 1 seat for 2027. His latest FP1 outing was his second official practice session in F1 and provided another opportunity to become familiar with the new-generation machinery.
Leonardo Fornaroli values every kilometre in McLaren FP1
Leonardo Fornaroli met with the Italian media in the Budapest paddock and explained the programme he completed during his second official Formula 1 practice appearance.
“I completed a work programme fairly similar to the others, with two runs on medium tyres and some aerodynamic testing on the softs. To finish, I did several consecutive laps, which were supposed to be on the softs, but after the lock-up I had at Turn 1, I had to change tyres because there was a fairly large flat spot that prevented me from continuing with that set,” Leonardo Fornaroli said.
His Formula 1 practice appearances have been added to the Testing of Previous Cars sessions he recently completed with McLaren and Haas. The continued running is helping Leonardo Fornaroli prepare in case an opportunity to join the grid arises in 2027.
“These are additional kilometres in the 2026 car. I am happy with the work we are doing, as everything is going smoothly and consistently,” he explained.
The hope is that experience with the 2026 Formula 1 cars will provide Leonardo Fornaroli with a competitive advantage as he searches for a full-time race seat.
“It is very important, also because I do not think the car will be completely different over the next few years. These are useful kilometres,” he added.
Fornaroli remains focused on the present amid 2027 F1 interest
Despite his ambitions of earning a place on the Formula 1 grid, Leonardo Fornaroli is refusing to look too far ahead and remains focused on making the most of his current opportunities.
“I am someone who does not think too much about the future, but only about doing the best possible job in the present. I hoped to be in contention for a seat next year and I am happy with where I am now,” the Italian driver said.
Leonardo Fornaroli also appears undisturbed by the increasing media attention and speculation surrounding his future.
“Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. It is obvious that there will be plenty of rumours, especially when a driver is trying to get onto the grid. It is completely normal, and I take it fairly lightly. I am someone who tries not to look too much at social media or the press, because I feel they can be a bit distracting,” Leonardo Fornaroli concluded.
