The 2025 Formula 1 British Grand Prix was arguably one of the most thrilling and action-packed races of the season so far. With dramatic twists, daring overtakes, and a remarkable third-place finish by Nico Hülkenberg—who ended one of the longest podium droughts in modern F1 history—it was a race to remember. On paper, everything about the event was spectacular. And yet, there was one crucial element that surprisingly flew under the radar: the home victory of McLaren driver Lando Norris.
The young British driver delivered an outstanding performance, taking the win in front of his home crowd at Silverstone. Despite the significance of this moment—his first-ever win at the British Grand Prix—Norris’s achievement was not met with widespread acclaim, neither in the immediate aftermath of the race nor in the days that followed. This raises a legitimate question: why was such an important milestone largely overlooked?
A crucial reset as the title fight intensifies
Just a month ago, the narrative surrounding Lando Norris was entirely different. He was coming off a devastating disappointment at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he was forced to retire late in the race after a controversial collision with teammate Oscar Piastri. That incident reignited debates about Norris’s maturity and ability to handle the pressures of a title fight. Many critics continued to label him as inconsistent or too fragile under pressure—criticisms that have followed him for years, growing louder over the past two seasons.
But in this year’s championship, McLaren finds itself without external rivals. The fight for the Formula 1 World Championship is firmly in-house, between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Both young drivers have a realistic shot at the title, a first for the Woking-based team in years. Oscar Piastri, in particular, has displayed focus, skill, and consistent racecraft throughout the opening twelve rounds, leading the championship standings. However, Lando Norris has closed the gap considerably.
Indeed, after his Canadian Grand Prix setback, Norris seems transformed. He appears more self-aware, more driven, and far more composed. The numbers speak for themselves: he has won the last two Grands Prix—Austria and Great Britain—reducing the gap to Piastri from 22 points to just 8. At both the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone, Norris showcased calmness and strategic intelligence, managing every phase of the race with precision. At Silverstone, in particular, he capitalized on Piastri’s time penalty to snatch the lead and hold on to it until the chequered flag, securing one of the most significant victories of his career.
With this triumph, Lando Norris becomes only the sixth British driver in Formula 1 history to win the British Grand Prix at home—a prestigious milestone that should have attracted considerable media attention. But while Lewis Hamilton still dominates the spotlight across the United Kingdom, it seems the lack of buzz around Norris’s victory may have deeper roots.
George Russell or Lando Norris? Has Hamilton’s successor already been chosen?
Although Sir Lewis Hamilton remains an active driver in Formula 1, the British public is well aware that his time in the sport is slowly coming to an end. Naturally, the question arises: who will be his worthy successor as Britain’s leading Formula 1 star? Will it be Mercedes driver George Russell or McLaren’s Lando Norris?
If we look at public sentiment in the United Kingdom, the answer already seems predetermined. George Russell is widely viewed as Hamilton’s natural heir, especially in the eyes of the domestic fanbase. Having risen through the ranks of Mercedes’ junior driver program, Russell has always been seen as quick, technically proficient, and highly professional. His image fits perfectly into the mold of what many consider to be the ideal British champion—disciplined, polished, and composed.
By contrast, Lando Norris has often seemed somewhat out of place within that framework. With a laid-back attitude, a sense of humor, and a strong presence on social media, Norris has captured the hearts of younger and more international fans. However, he has not always received the same level of patriotic support as Russell. His fluctuating results and uneven career trajectory have often left him struggling to earn full recognition from the home crowd. This discrepancy was apparent at Silverstone. While Nico Hülkenberg’s unexpected podium rightfully earned praise, the fact that Lando Norris’s win received so little attention suggests he may still be under intense scrutiny by his own nation’s supporters, who may be waiting for even greater consistency before fully embracing him.
Can the track silence the doubters?
As the Formula 1 season reaches its midpoint, twelve races remain on the calendar. With such a narrow gap separating him from Oscar Piastri in the standings, Lando Norris must aim to take the championship lead before the Hungarian Grand Prix. Achieving this before the summer break would not only position him as the title favorite but would also send a powerful message to fans, critics, and rivals alike.
Formula 1 has always been a sport where reputations are built over time. Some drivers capture the hearts of fans immediately. Others never quite manage to connect. And then there are those who, through growth and perseverance, eventually earn admiration and respect. Even if these twenty elite athletes are accustomed to moving at breakneck speeds, perhaps it is fair to give them time to find their place not just on the track—but in our hearts as well.
