Drive to Survive has chronicled the making of a champion in Lando Norris, following his career for eight years and capturing the pivotal moments that led to his 2025 world title.
While the 2025 season was memorable on the track, for Drive to Survive, the Netflix F1 series, Lando Norris’ triumph represents something even deeper. It is not just a sporting victory, but the culmination of a narrative arc that began in 2018, when Netflix cameras first entered the paddock to document the world of Formula 1.
“Lando’s story is huge. I remember when we sat down with McLaren many years ago, and they said to us: ‘We have big news, we’ll announce it shortly.’ That was Lando’s promotion to the 2019 F1 season. Following him for seven or eight years and then seeing everything culminate in a world championship is something truly special,” said the co-producer of the Netflix series.
The co-producer describes Norris as a rare talent
Gay-Rees portrays Lando Norris as an exceptional character in modern sport:
“Lando is a special young man because he wears his heart on his sleeve, even with us. He is incredibly authentic. In today’s era of ultra-mediated sport, he is a rarity. I think that’s why he has so many fans. He is instantly recognizable, while also being an extraordinary athlete.”
The hidden pressures behind the cameras
However, behind his spontaneity, there is also constant pressure, often invisible to the public eye.
“In modern motorsport, these young drivers are used to cameras everywhere, but it must be exhausting to live constantly under a magnifying glass. It’s one camera after another: ours, a TV channel, internal team content… it’s a lot of pressure for such young athletes. He seems like he has been in Formula 1 for a lifetime, but he is still in the middle of his twenties. Balancing all this while performing at the highest level is remarkable.”
Now, Netflix is preparing for the upcoming season, which promises to bring unprecedented new content and behind-the-scenes insights never seen before.
