During qualifying for the 2025 Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, British driver Lando Norris did not manage to secure pole position, but he still expressed satisfaction with his third-place result. The qualifying session was packed with excitement, featuring extremely narrow margins that promise a thrilling race on Sunday. Max Verstappen will start from pole position, followed by Oscar Piastri in second place and Lando Norris in third, setting the stage for an intense showdown.
Although he missed out on the top spot, Lando Norris was generally pleased with how his day went and considered the session to be positive overall. Naturally, the McLaren driver would have preferred to start from the front row, but he described the qualifying as “fun” and noted how the smallest details made the difference at Silverstone — a trait especially true in a season where the competition is incredibly close.
The young British talent believes that Sunday’s race will be enjoyable not only for the fans but also for the drivers. He is confident that not only the top three — Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, and himself — but also the drivers starting from behind will be contenders for the podium and potentially even the victory. “I can’t wait,” Norris admitted, clearly excited about racing in front of his home crowd once again.
Lando Norris reflects on qualifying at his home Grand Prix
This weekend marks a home race for Lando Norris, and without a doubt, he would have loved to secure pole position in front of the passionate British fans. However, the margins were incredibly tight throughout the weekend, and track conditions were far from ideal. Despite this, Norris was content with securing third on the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Speaking after the session, Lando Norris said: “Yeah, solid qualifying. I can’t be completely unhappy, but of course, we would have liked to be ahead—that’s clear. Max Verstappen did a great job today. – He continued: “We just weren’t quite quick enough, but it was still a fun qualifying session. Qualifying at Silverstone is always fast, and it’s enjoyable and exciting. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s still been a good day.”
Heavy wind, occasional rain, and Silverstone’s high-speed corners added to the circuit’s complexity. As Norris pointed out, this made it difficult for many drivers to piece together a flawless lap.
“It’s about the small things. The small details are what put you ahead or behind right now. We already saw how close it was in Q1, which is unusual. Tiny gaps, small errors, minor differences—just a few hundredths of a second here or there can be the deciding factor today,” explained the McLaren driver, who races under car number 4.
He added: “It’s tough, especially with the wind and the rain coming and going. But overall, very fun, and I’m happy with starting third.”
Lando Norris also started from third place on the grid during last year’s edition of the British Grand Prix. Naturally, he was asked whether he sees himself as a potential winner this time around, racing once again in front of a home crowd. With Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri ahead—two drivers Norris has fought closely with in the past—more wheel-to-wheel action is almost guaranteed. The British driver replied: “I think it’s going to be a fun one tomorrow. It should be a great battle between the three of us—and probably even more than just us.”
He concluded: “You’ll have Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and George Russell all starting from behind as well. It’s going to be an interesting Sunday, so I really can’t wait.”
