Lando Norris claimed pole position for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix with a remarkable final qualifying lap in Madrid, beating Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds after a weekend that had initially looked far less promising for McLaren. The reigning Formula 1 world champion produced a 1:31.824 on his final Q3 attempt to secure his third pole of the season at the inaugural Grand Prix weekend on the new Madring street circuit.
The result represented a dramatic turnaround after a difficult Friday. Norris had been forced to miss the entire second practice session because of a gearbox problem, costing him a significant amount of preparation time on a circuit that was completely new to the Formula 1 field. Even during the early stages of Q3, pole position appeared unlikely, with the McLaren driver only sixth after the opening runs.

The decisive moment arrived on Norris’s final attempt. The British driver managed to put every sector together when it mattered most, progressively improving throughout the lap before crossing the line with the fastest time of the session.
Even Norris appeared surprised by what he had produced.
“I’m shocked, surprised to be on pole. It was one of the best laps of my career. I put everything together, it was perfect. It’s one of those laps where you say to yourself: damn,” Norris said after qualifying.
The performance continued a strong period for the McLaren driver, who has explained how he believes he has developed into a better Formula 1 driver during the 2026 season. His Madrid pole also gives McLaren another important result as the team continues trying to close the gap to Mercedes at the front.
Norris says confidence and relaxation unlocked Spanish GP pole
According to Lando Norris, the decisive factor was mental rather than technical. When the pressure was highest, he was able to drive more naturally and avoid becoming consumed by the importance of the result.
“I felt good, I had confidence, I relaxed on the last lap and everything came together for me. Everything I wanted to do, I did,” he explained.
That final effort transformed the complexion of McLaren’s weekend. After the gearbox issue had prevented Norris from completing any meaningful FP2 running, the team recovered sufficiently for its lead driver to fight at the very front when qualifying reached its decisive phase.
McLaren has already been pushing to strengthen its position against Mercedes during the second half of the season, including through further upgrades planned around the Baku weekend. In Madrid, however, Norris delivered the immediate performance himself when the opportunity appeared.
Spanish GP grid puts Norris ahead of Antonelli and Verstappen
Kimi Antonelli will start alongside Norris on the front row after missing pole by only 11 thousandths of a second. Max Verstappen qualified third for Red Bull, 0.140 seconds away from the benchmark, while Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc secured fourth and fifth respectively for Ferrari.
The result creates an intriguing starting grid for the Spanish Grand Prix, particularly because overtaking at the new Madrid circuit may prove difficult. The technical challenge has already forced teams to explore different aerodynamic solutions, with McLaren adjusting its Madrid aerodynamic configuration during the weekend.
For Norris, pole position therefore carries particular importance because it gives him control of the start and the strongest possible track position for the opening phase of the race.
“I’ve given myself the opportunity to win, because it’s difficult to overtake here,” Norris said. “We’ll see tomorrow what we can do, but we are starting from an advantageous position. Then, in such a long race, anything can happen.”
After losing a substantial part of Friday’s programme and beginning the final Q3 shootout only sixth, Norris could hardly have asked for a stronger recovery. One final lap changed the entire picture, turning a difficult Madrid weekend into his third pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
