Lando Norris is heading into Formula 1’s summer break with renewed confidence after his Hungarian Grand Prix victory, and the reigning world champion believes the pressure in the 2026 title fight now belongs firmly to Kimi Antonelli. Norris remains 91 points behind the Mercedes driver, but rather than allowing that deficit to weigh on him, the McLaren driver is embracing the role of hunter as the championship prepares for its decisive second half.
The mood at the Hungaroring reflected that change. Lando Norris joked about his holiday plans, Max Verstappen immediately joined in, and beneath the light-hearted exchanges was a driver who appears far more relaxed than during the more difficult stages of his season. His message about the championship was equally clear: the driver leading the standings carries the pressure, while the one chasing can approach the fight differently.
Lando Norris and Max Verstappen joke about the summer break
Formula 1 is now required to stop for its summer shutdown, with factories closing and drivers heading away to spend time with friends and family or pursue other interests. After winning the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, Lando Norris was asked about his plans for the break and responded with his characteristic humour, seemingly keen to protect the small amount of privacy drivers can still enjoy.
“Oh, that’s nobody’s business.”
Max Verstappen, who finished second at the Hungaroring, immediately seized the opportunity to joke, referring to the new 2026 regulations and one of the recurring themes around Formula 1’s new-generation cars.
“Great answer. Put the battery on charge.”
Lando Norris laughed and replied with another joke that also amused the engineers: “I’m going to put the car on charge.”
He then offered a more straightforward description of what his summer will look like. “I’m just going to hang out with my friends, enjoy some time off with them and my family, play some golf and padel, and try to lose a bit of weight. That’s it.”
It was a light-hearted moment, but also a revealing one. Lando Norris reaches the summer break with a sense of calm that was not always present during the more difficult months of his season.
Lando Norris tells Kimi Antonelli: ‘The pressure is on him’
Thanks to his victory in Hungary, Lando Norris is now 91 points behind Kimi Antonelli in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings. It remains a substantial deficit, but not necessarily an insurmountable one considering the way Norris managed to recover ground during the second half of last season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the reigning world champion responded with a broad smile when asked whether he could catch the Mercedes driver during the second half of the campaign.
“How many points am I behind? He should be feeling the pressure, that’s for sure. It’ll take two races… or ten.”
Lando Norris then expanded on why he feels comfortable approaching the title battle from behind, displaying the confidence he developed during 2025 and has carried into the 2026 season.
“But anyway, the pressure is definitely on him. There’s no pressure on me, I feel very confident. They’ve made more mistakes as a team, while we’ve made fewer, and we’ve definitely come back stronger, but I expect them to keep winning races and I expect us to win more as well. We just have to be perfect.”
Kimi Antonelli’s position at the top of the championship has naturally increased the expectations surrounding the Mercedes youngster, with his development into a potential title-winning driver already becoming one of the central themes of the season. Former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola has also offered his assessment of why Kimi Antonelli is not yet an F1 champion, despite his impressive rise.
Norris wants to believe the comeback is possible
Asked about his ambitions for the second half of the season, Lando Norris stopped short of making any promises. However, his performance in Hungary has given him enough confidence to believe that McLaren can continue challenging Mercedes and keep the championship fight alive.
“I want to believe considering how good I felt today, I definitely want to believe that we can continue on this path. There will be moments when we struggle more and moments that could turn out to be even better.”
Lando Norris is not hiding from the challenge, but neither is he burdening himself with unnecessary pressure. Instead, he is placing that pressure onto Kimi Antonelli, doing so with a confidence that has taken time to develop.
That may be one of Norris’s greatest strengths heading into the second half of the 2026 season. He reaches the summer break knowing he is the driver who has to chase, but without allowing that pursuit to become a burden. With the championship leader still 91 points ahead, the task remains considerable, yet Norris is approaching it with the car, the batteries and, perhaps most importantly, his confidence recharged.
