Lando Norris reveals what he’s missing to win: “Half a tenth here, a tenth there”. Lando Norris reflects on McLaren’s progress at the Japanese GP.

Lando Norris, McLaren 2026 F1

Lando Norris leaves the weekend with a solid result and an even greater awareness: McLaren is not yet where it wants to be, but the team is learning to seize every opportunity. His words paint a picture of a race built with intelligence, careful management, and a potential that continues to grow.

Norris praises Oscar Piastri and the challenge of catching Ferrari

“Well, it’s clear that Oscar had an excellent race today. I think for me, trying to catch the Ferrari at the end, in clean air, was incredibly difficult here. In short, Oscar managed the situation very well right from the start,” Lando Norris said, highlighting Oscar Piastri’s strong performance.

He then assessed McLaren’s overall performance and what the team can take away from the weekend: “We both had a great start, which was nice. It felt good to be first and third and to relive that feeling. Beyond that, there are a lot of positive signals for us as a team. The fact that we managed to achieve such a strong result, even though we know there are still gaps in many areas, ending up second and fifth nonetheless, I think is a positive sign.

“All in all, I think today was a good day for us as a team, to give everyone a push and encourage them to keep working, even though we didn’t change much this weekend; it’s just that the track suited us. Obviously, we gained a little more from the setup, the battery, and the engine. So, only positive signs—some things remain a challenge.”

Norris details personal challenges and growth potential

The British driver reflected on his own learning process and the areas where he feels he can improve: “You know, we both have the same complaints about the car and the challenges we face. But in part, it also comes down to simply not having enough mileage. Plus, some situations I faced, in terms of degradation and the battery, I had to understand on the fly rather than having tested them on Friday.

“So, it was a good race from my side, and I think there were just small things here and there, half a tenth here, a tenth there, half a tenth there, where I was simply a little too behind over the weekend to fully learn them. But there are positive signs, there are always aspects I can work on and the team can work on, and together, when we are a little stronger and I feel more confident, then I’ll be very confident that I can get back to the top.”

Looking forward: building on good results

Norris’ words show a driver who is not satisfied with a solid result but uses it as a stepping stone to grow. McLaren is showing encouraging signs, yet there are still areas to improve. Lando knows it, feels it, and says it: when the team and driver are fully aligned, the level will rise even further. Then he will be ready to truly fight at the very top again.

Lando Norris’s assessment of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix highlights the microscopic gains needed to challenge the likes of Antonelli and Leclerc. Based on the content of his post-race analysis, the “learning on the fly” phase is nearly over, and McLaren’s upcoming updates could be the key to turning those tenths of a second into race victories.
