A comeback race at Imola for Lando Norris. The McLaren driver finished the race in second place, having started from fourth on the grid, ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Max Verstappen won the Imola GP ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The British McLaren driver got the better of his teammate thanks to a different strategy.
The race featured both a Virtual Safety Car and a Safety Car. Thanks to the latter, Lando Norris was able to pit and fit a new set of tyres. Oscar Piastri, having already completed two pit stops earlier, no longer had any new tyres available, so the team opted to keep him out on 20-lap-old hard tyres. The advantage of fresher tyres at the end of the race allowed Lando Norris to complete his comeback and secure second place.
Words after the race
At the end of the race, a smiling Lando Norris said:
“Yes, it was a long race. Overtaking wasn’t easy, and we did what we could. Max drove well. Today they were fast, probably even faster than us. We weren’t able to match his pace.”
Lando Norris then commented on the battle with Oscar Piastri during the Imola GP:
“There was a nice fight between me and Oscar, there’s always tension but it’s always fun too. Anyway, it was a great race for us as a team—second and third is excellent. Of course, it would have been better to be up there fighting with Max, but they were stronger today.”
Lando Norris pulled off a nice overtake on George Russell and commented on it at the end of the race:
“Yes, it was with George. I could see he was really struggling with his tyres, so it was a situation I had to take advantage of. It’s always risky, that’s true—you never want to overdo it with taking risks, but that’s racing. When there are these kinds of clean overtakes, it’s always a good race, and we made some nice passes today.”
