A mistake prevented Lando Norris from snatching pole position from Max Verstappen during Miami GP qualifying. The British McLaren driver will therefore start from second position, ahead of a superb Kimi Antonelli, who put together another outstanding lap following the one that earned him pole in the Sprint.
Car #4, after winning Saturday’s mini race, wasn’t able to string together a perfect lap in Q3. That explains the gap of less than seventy thousandths to an impeccable Max Verstappen in his Red Bull.
For Lando Norris, the Miami race will be a chance to try to reclaim the lead in the championship from his teammate. Oscar Piastri will start from fourth and will need to fight back in order not to lose points to his direct rivals.
Lando Norris comments on second place in qualifying
After the sixth qualifying session of the year, Lando Norris commented on his performance, joking about Max Verstappen. “Congrats to Max. I was hoping he’d slow down after the baby was born but that didn’t happen. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made but Max still put together one of his usual laps. I’m still excited for the race,” said Lando Norris. “The lock-up at Turn 17 was a shame because I couldn’t be perfect. The pace was there and I felt more comfortable compared to previous weekends. I just didn’t manage to put it all together. Max is on pole and I’m second, so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the race.”
“I felt really good on intermediates, so hopefully it rains. No, actually it doesn’t really matter to me whether it’s dry or wet. The weather seems pretty unpredictable though, so we’ll see,” concluded the Briton.
