In the 2024 Formula 1 drivers’ championship standings, Lando Norris is 52 points behind Max Verstappen, with six races left and three sprints to go. The maximum points available, considering fast laps, for the first-place finisher is 180. With some quick calculations, the English McLaren driver needs to close the gap on Max Verstappen by an average of 8.7 points per race to win the title in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
Andrew Benson, a well-known Formula 1 correspondent for the BBC, also weighed in on the subject, saying: “The problem for the McLaren driver is that, although he has reduced Verstappen’s lead in each of the last four races since the summer break, it hasn’t been enough. The average points that Norris needs to recover in each race have increased, even though the gap between the two drivers has decreased.” – the Formula 1 journalist explained.
Andrew Benson also pointed out that Max Verstappen only needs to finish second behind his rival in every race to maintain his lead and win the 2024 Formula One title: “This average is higher than the gap between first and second place, even if you add the point for the fastest lap. So, Verstappen can afford to finish second behind Norris, even if the Briton wins all the remaining races, and the Red Bull driver would still be champion.”
The McLaren driver will therefore need to look for allies on track, and BBC journalist Andrew Benson agrees: “Norris certainly needs external forces to help him in some way. He is not in control of his own destiny. All he can do is keep winning and hope that other events play in his favor.” – he pointed out ahead of the next round of the season, the United States Grand Prix, which will take place at COTA in Austin.
Thus, for Lando Norris to have any chance of winning the 2024 F1 drivers’ championship, he must also work to secure some allies. We believe there are no shortage of names, starting with British drivers like Lewis Hamilton, who still has some unfinished business with the Dutch Red Bull driver.
