Technical upgrades controversy: Norris hits back at Alonso, “Some drivers talk too much”
Fernando Alonso criticized rival teams over their relentless development despite Formula 1’s budget cap, but Lando Norris wasted no time firing back.
A new debate over technical developments
Fernando Alonso voiced his frustration, and Lando Norris responded with a blunt reply. The latest controversy in the Formula 1 paddock erupted after the Aston Martin driver questioned how rival teams continue to introduce new upgrades almost every race weekend despite operating under the sport’s budget cap, while Aston Martin has been left with very little progress in comparison.
The issue resurfaced during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend at the Red Bull Ring, where the struggling AMR26 arrived without any significant technical updates. Despite being led by renowned aerodynamic designer Adrian Newey, Aston Martin has increasingly found itself rooted to the back of the grid, even trailing Cadillac’s newcomer team by around one second.
Lando Norris responds to Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso first raised the issue during Thursday’s FIA press conference in Austria, joking that, “It looks like the other teams have machines printing money in their factories, judging by the FIA documents listing all the technical updates released every Friday.“
The comment did not sit well with reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris, who dismissed the criticism in no uncertain terms.
“I think some drivers talk too much, especially because they often don’t understand what the teams are actually doing. They’re not accountants, and they really have no idea how the system works. So I’m not surprised at all by those comments,” Lando Norris replied.
The McLaren driver went on to explain that the ability to introduce frequent upgrades depends on much more than simply spending money.
“I think a lot depends on how quickly you’re able to manufacture certain components, how long it takes to produce each new part, how much work you put into them over the winter, and things like that,” Lando Norris added in response to Fernando Alonso’s remarks.
“It’s also about efficiency and the way you manage to bring new parts into production and ultimately onto the car. That’s why I don’t think people can really comment on what happens inside other teams. Every team wants to do its job better than its rivals, and you’re always trying to outperform everyone else in every possible way.”
