Lando Norris has renewed his McLaren contract for another four years, committing his Formula 1 future to the Woking team until at least the end of the 2030 season. By then, the reigning world champion will be 31 years old and will have completed 12 F1 seasons with McLaren, underlining just how deep the relationship between driver and team has become.
The new deal is also a powerful statement of loyalty to the team that developed Lando Norris, gave him his Formula 1 debut and ultimately helped him fulfil his dream of winning the Drivers’ Championship in 2025. For Lando Norris, however, the decision is about considerably more than results alone.
Lando Norris explains his long-term commitment to McLaren
“It’s a continuation of my last contract,” the 26-year-old from Bristol explained in an exclusive interview with Formula 1’s official website. “Now we just want to be able to focus on doing our best job, extracting the maximum performance, getting the most out of everyone and focusing on the importance of not getting caught up in the mess of contract negotiations.
“I didn’t want to distract my team, I don’t want to distract the guys and girls here who are here to give me the best car possible and allow me to do the best job possible for them. For me, it’s a way of saying, ‘Guys, I’m here to stay and I want to be here for a long time’, which gives everyone a nice boost. It gives me a boost as well.”
The commitment effectively ties Lando Norris to McLaren for almost his entire Formula 1 career to date. The decision has undoubtedly been made easier by the fact that the team is competitive and capable of winning, particularly after recovering from a difficult start to the 2026 campaign.
McLaren has recently returned to the front of the field, with Lando Norris’s Dutch Grand Prix victory and further development progress providing fresh momentum. Yet Lando Norris insists outright performance was not the decisive factor behind such a major long-term commitment.
Results are not everything for Lando Norris
“In 99% of cases, you can say that results are the most important thing, but there is also some leeway, an advantage in the fact that I’m now with the people I want to be with and with whom I enjoy spending my career,” Lando Norris said. “I didn’t want to move from one team to another and do different things. I want to be where I’m happy and, even when we weren’t winning, I was still happy to be part of McLaren.”
That sense of belonging has become central to Lando Norris’s thinking about his Formula 1 future. The reigning champion remains ambitious and determined to fight for results, but he does not see a difficult spell on track as an automatic reason to consider changing teams.
“One thing I’ve always known for my future is that I want results, obviously, and the team knows that better than anyone,” Lando Norris continued. “But I also simply want to be where I’m happiest and, even if we’re not winning like at the beginning of this year, it’s not as though I want to change.
“I’m still very happy with the people I’m working with and happy to fight through whatever challenges we have coming up together.”
With his future now secured until at least the end of 2030, Lando Norris can concentrate fully on McLaren’s performance without becoming caught up in future Formula 1 driver-market speculation. The new agreement strengthens a partnership that began before his Grand Prix debut and has already produced the biggest achievement of his career: a Formula 1 world championship.
