Lando Norris and the heatstroke incident
Norris was the star of the Singapore GP weekend, winning the race in a dominant fashion. Despite a couple of mistakes that could have ended his triumphant march, the victory seemed almost easy for Lando Norris. At least until the moment when the young British driver removed his helmet, revealing to the cameras his face worn out by the heat and exhaustion. The higher-than-usual temperatures, combined with the typically high humidity levels, made the Marina Bay race tougher than ever. This led to some drivers feeling unwell, prompting Mercedes to cancel Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s post-GP interviews.
Lando Norris criticizes Mercedes
Russell, for instance, visibly staggered after getting out of the car, needing to lean on the wheel of a parked car in the parc fermé area to avoid collapsing. However, Lando Norris did not appreciate Mercedes’ decision to skip the media interviews. Despite feeling unwell himself after the checkered flag – during the interviews, David Coulthard even poured a bottle of water over his head – Lando Norris still showed up to speak to journalists. That’s why he criticized the absence of his two compatriots during a Twitch streaming session of an iRacing simulator game, sparking a small controversy on social media, especially among English-speaking fans.
During the live stream hosted by his teammate and friend Max Fewtrell – a former Formula 3 driver in 2019 and 2020, now a professional streamer – Norris sarcastically commented on Mercedes’ decision to excuse the drivers from the usual post-race interviews: “Has Toto Wolff already posted updates on Hamilton and Russell’s health? Damn, it was tough for all of us! Why do they think… If they had heatstroke, then we all had heatstroke!” The two Mercedes drivers were the only ones among the 20 on the grid who did not show up for interviews immediately after the race.
