Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri produced one of the most intense battles of the closing stages of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, going wheel-to-wheel for fourth place as McLaren allowed its two drivers to fight at Monza. Piastri initially held the position despite serving a three-place grid penalty, but Norris eventually found a way through and crossed the finish line ahead of his team-mate.
The fight added another chapter to the competitive dynamic inside McLaren. Piastri had put together a strong race and even challenged Max Verstappen for a place on the podium, but that battle also left him vulnerable to a charging Norris in the final stages.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fight hard for fourth at Monza
Oscar Piastri’s efforts against Max Verstappen contributed to bringing Lando Norris back into contention, and the number 81 soon found himself defending from his McLaren team-mate. The battle became particularly tense when Norris attempted a move shortly before the second chicane.
Piastri defended firmly and closed the door, leaving Norris to put part of his car onto the grass at very high speed. The reigning world champion immediately expressed his displeasure over the radio, although his view of the incident became more measured once he had stepped out of the car.
Norris eventually moved ahead before the chequered flag to claim fourth, with Piastri completing McLaren’s afternoon in fifth. Their close fight quickly became one of the main subjects of discussion during the post-race media interviews.
Lando Norris changes his view of Piastri defence
Despite his initial reaction from inside the cockpit, Lando Norris admitted afterwards that he did not consider Oscar Piastri’s defence particularly unfair.
“I still need to review a few things, but I think it’s just a matter of perception when you’re in the car: when someone opens the gap a little and then accelerates sharply, you get that perception when you’re doing 320 km/h. That’s all.”
“But I think what he did [referring to Piastri] was fair. It’s just that when you’re in the heat of the action and you’re half on the grass, you realise how quickly things can go wrong in the heat of the moment. But from that point of view, everything was fine, and it was a good battle. So yes, a good result from a tough race,” Lando Norris added.
The result continued a strong period for Norris, who had arrived at Monza following two consecutive victories and has previously explained how he believes he has developed as a Formula 1 driver during the 2026 season.
Oscar Piastri calls McLaren fight ‘exciting’
Oscar Piastri offered a similar assessment of the duel and highlighted the added tactical challenge created by the need to manage electrical energy during the final laps.
“It was definitely a tough battle. I think we were both quite evenly matched, especially in the last few laps, so it was definitely difficult to work out when to use the battery and when not to,” the Australian explained.
“I think we saw a good battle. From my point of view, I think it was good racing, exciting, that’s for sure, and ultimately I think this was the best result we could have achieved as a team, so I’m pretty happy with it,” Oscar Piastri concluded.
McLaren falls behind Mercedes and Max Verstappen at Monza
After arriving in Italy on the back of two consecutive victories, McLaren found itself chasing Mercedes and Max Verstappen rather than fighting for the win at Monza. Norris and Piastri still secured fourth and fifth, but the result reinforced the drivers’ previous comments that some areas of the car still need improvement if McLaren is to challenge the Silver Arrows consistently for victories.
Norris has already acknowledged that McLaren still has weaknesses it needs to eliminate in order to maximise its potential across every type of circuit. Monza offered another example of how dramatically the competitive order can change depending on a track’s specific characteristics.
The focus now turns immediately to Madrid and the new “Madring”, which makes its debut on the Formula 1 calendar this weekend. McLaren will be looking for a stronger opportunity to challenge Mercedes at the front, while the increasingly competitive relationship between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will remain another storyline to follow closely.
