Robin Räikkönen will join the Red Bull Junior Team from 2027, taking another important step in a motorsport journey that could eventually lead the son of 2007 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Räikkönen towards the same stage on which his father became a star. The young Finnish karter has received the full backing of his family as Red Bull prepares to support his development over the coming years.
There is a certain irony to the situation. Kimi Räikkönen has said on several occasions that he would have preferred not to steer his son towards becoming a racing driver. A parent can try to keep a child away from a career that brings difficult moments as well as extraordinary ones, but when that child wants nothing else, the only realistic choice is to provide as much support as possible.
Kimi Räikkönen ‘thrilled’ by Robin’s Red Bull Junior Team move
That is now the path the Räikkönen family has chosen. Robin Räikkönen will become part of Red Bull’s young-driver programme from 2027 as he continues developing from karting towards the higher levels of single-seater racing.
“We are all thrilled and excited that Robin has been chosen to further his racing path as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team,” Kimi Räikkönen said. “Laurent and everyone else at Red Bull have been incredibly supportive throughout all our discussions. They offer a compelling and comprehensive programme to develop and nurture Robin’s progress over the coming years and provide him with all the experience required to develop his natural talent, which he has amply displayed in all his karting endeavours to date.”
The Red Bull Junior Team has established one of Formula 1’s most prominent development pathways over the years, helping young drivers progress towards the championship and producing talents including Max Verstappen.
Gwen Lagrue adds experience to Red Bull’s junior programme
Red Bull has also recently strengthened its young-driver structure by signing Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes. Lagrue played a central role throughout Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s development, following the Italian’s progression from karting all the way to Formula 1.
That experience will now become part of the structure supporting Red Bull’s next generation of prospects, including Robin Räikkönen. For a driver still at such an early stage of his career, the emphasis will inevitably be on gradual development rather than rushing through the junior categories.
Could Robin Räikkönen eventually race Kimi Antonelli in F1?
Could Robin Räikkönen one day find himself racing Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Formula 1? It is a question that will require considerable patience before it can be answered.
Robin Räikkönen was born in 2015 and remains years away from being eligible for Formula 1, even if his performances eventually justify such an opportunity. On the conventional age requirement, he would not be able to make his Formula 1 debut before 2033.
For now, any comparison with established Formula 1 drivers is therefore premature. The immediate priority is karting, development and making the most of the resources Red Bull intends to provide. What is already clear is that Kimi Räikkönen is fully behind his son’s decision to pursue the same demanding career that took him to the Formula 1 world title.
