Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his first Formula 1 victory, bringing Italy back to the top step of the podium in an F1 Grand Prix. Completing the top three were teammate George Russell in the other Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. After a less-than-perfect start, Antonelli recovered to first place and from that point on simply had to manage the race. The real battle unfolded behind him, between George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc. Three drivers, but only two podium spots. After the Chinese GP, Antonelli’s father shared his thoughts on his son’s triumph, expressing his joy while also remaining cautious.
A first milestone
Marco Antonelli, celebrating with his son and the Mercedes team after the Chinese GP, spoke to Sky Sport F1. He commented on his son’s first F1 win: “I’m happy. I think he earned it because of the consistency and dedication he put into doing what he loves in life. We’ve tried to support him, as I think all families do with their children. We were very fortunate because Mercedes took him on from a young age and they have done a great job.”
Despite his happiness, Marco Antonelli remains cautious: “He’s achieved an important milestone in his career, but the road is still long. We’re just at the beginning, and George [Russell] was held up behind the Ferraris, so let’s say he had it a bit easier, to be honest. He was fast, but you need to see what happens when they’re close together.”
Russell spent most of the race battling the two Ferraris, and once Antonelli cleared them, he had built too large a gap to challenge the lead.
While the Antonelli family celebrates a historic moment for Italian motorsport, the focus remains firmly on the long-term development required to stay at the front of the grid. Marco Antonelli’s grounded perspective serves as a reminder that in the high-stakes world of Formula 1, every victory is just the starting point for the next challenge.
