Kimi Antonelli had virtually eliminated the mistakes that marked his rookie season during the 2026 Formula 1 championship, but Baku produced his most costly error of the year. The Italian hit the inside wall at Turn 1 in Q1, destroying the front-left suspension and ending his qualifying session, while George Russell went on to take pole in the same Mercedes by more than eight tenths of a second.
The championship leader did not look for excuses afterwards, describing the mistake as “very stupid” and “unnecessary”. Another detail subsequently attracted attention: Toto Wolff was not in Baku when it happened.
Toto Wolff absent when Kimi Antonelli crashes in Baku qualifying
The Mercedes team principal missed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to follow his son Jack, who was competing in karting. Vice team principal Bradley Lord therefore led the team trackside in Baku. It was only Toto Wolff’s second absence of the 2026 season, following the Japanese Grand Prix.
The coincidence did not go unnoticed, particularly in Germany. Sky journalist Peter Hardenacke asked former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock whether Toto Wolff’s absence could have had any significance following Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying mistake, given that the Italian is still only 20 years old and has become accustomed to having the Mercedes team principal as one of his main reference points.
The relationship between the pair goes beyond the usual dynamic between a team principal and driver. Toto Wolff has personally overseen Kimi Antonelli’s development and has repeatedly explained this season how Mercedes has tried to protect the Italian from excessive pressure, stressing the importance of approaching the championship fight one step at a time.
Past results do not support a link between Wolff’s absence and Antonelli mistakes
The numbers, however, make it difficult to take the coincidence any further.
The other Grand Prix Toto Wolff missed in 2026 was Suzuka. On that occasion, Kimi Antonelli won the race and became the championship leader. Wolff had also been absent from the Japanese Grand Prix in 2025, when Kimi Antonelli finished sixth, recorded the fastest lap and made no significant mistakes.
Toto Wolff was absent again at Imola, but Kimi Antonelli’s retirement there was caused by a problem with the car rather than a driver error.
In contrast, the Italian’s biggest mistakes of 2025 came with Toto Wolff regularly present on the Mercedes pit wall.
At Monaco, Kimi Antonelli hit the wall in qualifying. In Austria, he misjudged the braking point at Turn 3 and collided with Max Verstappen. At Spa, he spun into the gravel during Sprint Qualifying and damaged the floor, while in Hungary a track-limits violation resulted in the deletion of a lap that would have given him a better starting position.
Zandvoort then brought an FP1 off and, more significantly, contact with Charles Leclerc during the race. At Monza, Kimi Antonelli went into the gravel during practice before later receiving a penalty for forcing Alexander Albon off the track.
Finally, in Qatar, a mistake in the closing laps allowed Lando Norris to take fourth place from him. Toto Wolff was present throughout all of those weekends and often intervened personally to defend Kimi Antonelli or analyse the mistakes afterwards.
Baku remains an isolated mistake rather than evidence of Wolff dependence
Baku therefore remains an isolated episode rather than evidence that Kimi Antonelli depends on the physical presence of his mentor at the circuit. What cannot be dismissed is the sporting cost of the mistake, which was greater than that of any other error the Italian has made during his 2026 campaign.
The contrast with his team-mate was particularly stark. While Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying ended in Q1, George Russell took a dominant Azerbaijan GP pole position with an advantage of more than eight tenths.
Kimi Antonelli himself described Baku as “by far the worst weekend of the season”. Starting 16th, he recovered to fifth place in the race, but George Russell converted his opportunity into victory.
George Russell cuts Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead
The result had a significant effect on the 2026 Formula 1 championship standings. George Russell recovered 15 points from his Mercedes team-mate, reducing Kimi Antonelli’s advantage from 81 points to 66.
For a driver whose 2026 season had until Baku been defined partly by how successfully he had eliminated the errors of his rookie campaign, the Azerbaijan weekend represented an unusual setback. The circumstances surrounding Toto Wolff’s absence may have prompted questions, but Antonelli’s previous results provide little evidence of a direct connection.
