Kimi Antonelli has unveiled the special helmet he will wear at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, with the Formula 1 championship leader paying a striking tribute to Valentino Rossi for his home race at Monza. Designed by Aldo Drudi, the helmet combines the Italian tricolour with the famous sun and moon imagery associated with Rossi, while a cartoon on the rear depicts the two Italian stars together.
It is a helmet that says almost everything without needing much explanation. The Mercedes driver has revealed the colours he will carry this weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, where the 20-year-old will contest his first home Grand Prix as leader of the Formula 1 World Championship.
Kimi Antonelli reveals special Monza helmet
The colours of the Italian flag were already part of Antonelli’s regular helmet design, making him easy to recognise throughout the season. For Monza, however, the Italian identity has become far more prominent.
The tricolour covers the entire helmet and provides the background for the illustrations created by Drudi Performance and Aldo Drudi, the designer responsible for many of the most famous helmets worn by Valentino Rossi during his extraordinary motorcycle racing career.
The arrangement of the green, white and red is also reminiscent of a design previously used in Formula 1 by Antonio Giovinazzi. Now the same unmistakably Italian theme is being brought back into the spotlight by Kimi Antonelli.
His weekend will not be straightforward, however. The Mercedes driver faces a major recovery drive because of the penalty associated with introducing a new power unit into his allocation, meaning the championship leader will start from the back of the grid. Antonelli has nevertheless already made clear that he believes a top-five finish remains within reach at Monza.
Valentino Rossi influence is unmistakable
The connection with Valentino Rossi goes far beyond Aldo Drudi’s involvement in designing the helmet. On the rear, Antonelli and Rossi are depicted together in a cartoon, with Kimi sitting on the shoulders of the man known throughout motorsport simply as “The Doctor”.
The two sides of Antonelli’s helmet also feature the symbols that became synonymous with Rossi’s own designs. On one side is a stylised sun, picked out in gold against the green section, while the other features a golden moon against the red.
Between them is a collection of illustrations representing Italian identity, including some deliberately stereotypical references. Among them are a plate of pasta, the blue shirt of Italy’s national football team, a bidet, family, a mandolin and pizza.
Antonelli carries his friendship with Valentino Rossi to Monza
The final design therefore brings together Antonelli’s Italian identity and his genuine friendship with Valentino Rossi, a relationship the Mercedes driver has chosen to celebrate during one of the most important weekends of his career.
The home support promises to create an unusual dynamic at Monza. Ferrari will inevitably command enormous backing from the tifosi, but Antonelli arrives as an Italian leading the World Championship while driving for Mercedes. The question of where the Italian fans’ loyalties will lie at Monza has consequently become one of the intriguing subplots surrounding the weekend.
In the end, much of the pressure could fall on Antonelli’s rivals. Starting from the rear means he will have to attack from the opening stages, but he knows he has both a competitive car and the driving ability to work his way back towards the positions that matter.
And if Antonelli manages to produce the recovery he is targeting, the Valentino Rossi-inspired helmet could become attached to one of the most memorable races of his Formula 1 career.
