The Italian driver was simply untouchable in qualifying at Suzuka, delivering a flawless lap that confirmed his growing status as one of Formula 1’s rising stars.
Second pole for the Italian
It was an undisputed pole position, achieved with a clear margin on one of the most demanding circuits of the season. Andrea Kimi Antonelli appears to be in an extraordinary rhythm, and the first to feel the difference was his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who ended up 298 thousandths behind – an eternity in qualifying terms.
While in China George Russell could attribute his defeat to technical issues in Q3, there is no room for doubt here: Antonelli was simply faster, distributing his advantage evenly between the second and third sectors. This pole was therefore not a one-off or ‘episodic’, but rather a lap built perfectly curve by curve.
Antonelli reflects on a promising weekend
The young Italian commented on what has so far been a highly promising weekend: “The secret behind the pole and my effectiveness in the third sector? I had three clean practice sessions, consistently improving,” Kimi Antonelli explained to Sky Sport F1. “The weekend in China gave me more confidence, especially regarding the start, because finally in that Grand Prix I managed to get off the line well. Tomorrow I will certainly have a lot of butterflies in my stomach, but obviously I’m happy because I’m in the best possible position. I’ll try to make a good start without overdoing it, the goal is to be first into Turn 1 and then set a strong pace.”
Kimi Antonelli’s performance at Suzuka marks a significant shift in his season’s momentum, proving he can dominate on pure driver tracks. Based on the content of his post-qualifying remarks, his primary focus is now on the operational execution of the race start to ensure he can dictate the rhythm from the front.
