Kimi Antonelli stunned to learn he can win 2026 F1 title in Austin after Singapore podium

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes 2025 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli discovered only in front of the television cameras after the Singapore Grand Prix that he will have his first mathematical opportunity to become Formula 1 world champion at the next round in Austin. After finishing third in a race won by Max Verstappen, the Mercedes driver was told by Jenson Button during the official F1 TV interview that the 2026 title could already be decided at the United States Grand Prix.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s reaction was immediate. “Can I? Really?” he asked with his eyes widening before almost correcting himself and returning to the approach he has followed throughout the season: focus on the next weekend and try to maximise every opportunity. The 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings, however, now show 340 points for the Italian against 238 for George Russell, a gap of 102 points.

Antonelli did not realise he could win the F1 title in Austin

The surprise becomes easier to understand when considering everything Andrea Kimi Antonelli had been dealing with during one of the most complicated weekends of his season.

Mercedes had chosen his side of the garage to continue experimenting with the new W17 specification that had failed to perform as hoped at Sepang. George Russell, by contrast, returned to the older aerodynamic package.

Friday’s comparison was particularly difficult for the championship leader. George Russell took second in Sprint Qualifying, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli could manage only seventh, almost seven tenths behind his team-mate.

The Italian described his Mercedes as “very difficult” and unpredictable. A complete return to the previous specification was also impossible during the weekend because of the complexity of the aerodynamic and internal changes involved.

Major Mercedes set-up change transforms Antonelli’s weekend

Mercedes responded by making substantial changes to the car’s set-up. On Saturday, the 20-year-old finally began to see the true potential of the updated package.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished fourth in the Sprint before qualifying fourth for the Grand Prix as well, this time only 0.189 seconds away from pole position.

The updated W17 still possessed an extremely narrow operating window, but the changes gave the Italian enough confidence to openly target the podium. It was an important turnaround after a Friday on which the new specification had appeared significantly more difficult to exploit than George Russell’s older car.

The improvement was another important step in Mercedes’ effort to understand the latest W17 aerodynamic package and convert its theoretical performance into something the driver could use consistently on track.

Brake problem threatens Antonelli before Singapore GP even starts

Another concern emerged before the race had even begun. On the starting grid, the Mercedes brake system stopped supplying information correctly, apparently because of a sensor problem.

Mechanics had to work on Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s car only minutes before the formation lap, but they completed the intervention in time for him to take the start.

That was only the beginning of a physically and technically demanding race for the championship leader.

Antonelli races without cooling vest in Singapore heat

Singapore is one of the most physically demanding races on the Formula 1 calendar, yet Andrea Kimi Antonelli had chosen not to use a cooling vest.

He had previously explained that a malfunction with the system had once pumped water at approximately 50 degrees Celsius onto him, causing heatstroke.

During the Singapore Grand Prix, Andrea Kimi Antonelli reported liquid around his feet before delivering a much more worrying radio message concerning the brakes.

“I have no brakes, I went straight,” he reported after noticing that the brake pedal travel had become longer than it had been initially.

Mercedes checked the data and, after several laps, the situation appeared to stabilise.

Track limits add another risk to Antonelli’s podium bid

Andrea Kimi Antonelli also had to be extremely careful with track limits, an issue he has faced several times during the season.

The Mercedes driver received the black-and-white flag, leaving him on the verge of a penalty if he committed another infringement.

Yet it was during the closing laps that Andrea Kimi Antonelli constructed the result that ultimately transformed his championship situation.

Antonelli passes Norris and Hamilton to secure Singapore podium

Andrea Kimi Antonelli took advantage of the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, passing both the McLaren and the Ferrari to move his Mercedes into third place.

Once in the podium position, he pushed the gap beyond five seconds, giving himself protection against a potential penalty in the event of another track-limits infringement.

George Russell, meanwhile, had started from the back because of a power-unit change and could recover only to ninth place.

A weekend that had begun with Andrea Kimi Antonelli struggling to control an unpredictable car therefore ended with the championship leader gaining another 13 points over his direct title rival.

That margin represents another major shift from earlier in the campaign, when George Russell had already fallen 81 points behind Antonelli. Singapore has now widened the gap to 102.

Antonelli gets first 2026 F1 title match point at Austin

Five Grands Prix and 125 points remain available from Austin onwards. Andrea Kimi Antonelli will arrive in Texas holding a 102-point advantage over George Russell and therefore with his first mathematical opportunity to close out the championship.

If he succeeds at the United States Grand Prix, the 20-year-old would become the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history.

It is an extraordinary prospect after a Singapore weekend that began with his Mercedes almost undriveable, continued through major set-up changes, a pre-race brake sensor concern, intense heat and further brake worries, and ended with a podium.

Perhaps the most remarkable detail is that Andrea Kimi Antonelli himself appeared to be the last person to have calculated what the result meant. Only when Jenson Button mentioned the possibility during the post-race interview did the Italian realise that Austin could already be the weekend on which his first Formula 1 world championship is secured.
