Kimi Antonelli reveals Singapore ordeal and targets return to winning at Austin

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Kimi Antonelli is determined to return to winning ways at the 2026 United States Grand Prix, approaching the potentially decisive Austin weekend with confidence despite Mercedes’ recent struggles. The Italian also revealed how his Singapore podium came after an exhausting race in which his drinking system failed and the extreme heat pushed him towards his physical limits.

Although the Formula 1 championship battle is entering a crucial phase, Kimi Antonelli appears remarkably relaxed. The Mercedes driver arrived in the Austin paddock showing the same composure that has characterised his season, with no obvious signs that the possibility of securing his first world title has changed his approach. Instead, he is focused on recovering the performance Mercedes demonstrated during the first half of 2026.

Kimi Antonelli targets Austin victory after Mercedes upgrade difficulties

Mercedes has endured a more challenging period since introducing its latest upgrade package, and Kimi Antonelli admits that he has struggled to extract the expected performance from the revised W17. Nevertheless, the Italian believes the team’s analysis following Singapore has provided encouraging indications ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

“I don’t feel any particular tension. In fact, I’m excited because I’d like to get back to winning. We’ve been struggling for a while, and I’ve also encountered some difficulties with the new package. But I’m more confident about this weekend. The team has had a week to analyse the data and understand the car better. We’ve seen some interesting things, so hopefully we can get off to a good start,” Kimi Antonelli explained.

The Circuit of The Americas will therefore provide Mercedes with another opportunity to assess its recent developments and determine whether it can recover the competitiveness needed to challenge for victory. With the title battle approaching a potentially decisive moment, understanding the W17’s behaviour will be particularly important.

How Kimi Antonelli handles the pressure of the 2026 F1 title fight

One of the most striking aspects of Kimi Antonelli’s season has been his ability to remain calm despite his age and the growing expectations surrounding his championship challenge. As his advantage in the Drivers’ Championship increased, the Italian became an increasingly realistic title contender, but his public attitude remained largely unchanged.

Kimi Antonelli believes the key is to maintain his usual approach and concentrate on the work required from one race weekend to the next, rather than becoming distracted by the attention surrounding his results.

“I think it’s important to remain yourself and try to enjoy every moment with the team, at the track. When you manage to have the right mindset and understand that if you don’t focus on what you need to do, the results won’t come, it also becomes easier to shut out all the noise around you,” he said.

The possibility of winning the world championship is hardly a new subject for the Mercedes driver. Discussions about his title prospects began when he took the championship lead at Suzuka, and he has had to manage those expectations throughout the campaign.

“People have been talking about the possibility of winning the World Championship for quite a long time now. They were already talking about it when I took the championship lead at Suzuka. Having a good group of people around me and a supportive family helps a lot. But above all, what matters is being able to concentrate on the important things. That allows you to approach everything more lightly and enjoy what you’re doing more. At the end of the day, I’m doing what I love, so I can’t complain. If I do my job well, the rest will follow,” Kimi Antonelli explained.

Kimi Antonelli reveals drinking system failure during Singapore Grand Prix

The composure Kimi Antonelli displayed in Austin contrasts sharply with the physical ordeal he experienced during the previous Grand Prix in Singapore. Although he finished on the podium, the Mercedes driver endured a far more difficult race than was apparent from the outside.

The first major problem emerged after approximately 10 to 15 laps, when the system supplying drinking water inside his cockpit stopped working. Kimi Antonelli noticed liquid around his feet and then discovered that he could no longer drink, leaving him without his usual source of hydration during one of the most physically demanding races on the calendar.

“The system broke after 10 or 15 laps. At one point, I felt some liquid around my feet, and when I tried to drink, nothing came through any more. Considering how much I was struggling physically, I’m pleased I managed to stay clear-headed,” he recalled.

The combination of Singapore’s heat, high humidity and extended periods spent following other cars placed an increasing physical strain on the Mercedes driver. Despite those conditions, he managed to maintain his concentration and bring the W17 home on the podium.

Why Kimi Antonelli raised his hand during the Singapore race

Kimi Antonelli also explained an unusual gesture noticed during the race, when he occasionally raised one hand out of the cockpit. The movement was not a signal of frustration or a technical problem; he was attempting to cool himself while coping with the increasingly uncomfortable conditions.

“The palm of the hand is one of the areas through which the body can cool itself. That’s why I occasionally raised my hand, trying to get a little relief. At the beginning, I felt reasonably well, but the worst moment came during the pit stop. When you stop, you suddenly feel all the heat from the car, and that’s when I really started to struggle,” he explained.

The experience highlighted the physical demands of the Singapore Grand Prix and the difficulties that can arise when a driver’s hydration system stops functioning. For Kimi Antonelli, completing the race on the podium required not only competitive speed but also considerable concentration under exhausting conditions.

Now back in Austin, the Mercedes driver is hoping for a less demanding weekend physically and a more competitive performance from the W17. With renewed confidence in the team’s understanding of its upgrade package, his objective remains straightforward: return to the top step of the podium while keeping his attention on the work required to complete a potentially historic championship season.
