Kimi Antonelli may be dominating the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at just 20 years old, but the Mercedes driver insists he is refusing to become distracted by the prospect of winning the title. With an 81-point advantage over George Russell, Antonelli says his focus remains firmly on extracting the maximum from every race rather than thinking about the championship.
A major part of that mentality comes from the people around him, particularly his father Marco Antonelli, who the young Italian says has no hesitation in bringing him back down to earth whenever necessary.
Kimi Antonelli credits father Marco for keeping him grounded
It is an extraordinary situation for a driver who has only recently turned 20 and is competing in his second Formula 1 season. Antonelli has emerged as the dominant figure in a championship that, on paper, many expected to revolve around the more experienced Russell on the other side of the Mercedes garage.
Despite the attention surrounding his results, Antonelli has repeatedly insisted that he is trying to keep his approach simple. His family has played an important role in that process, something he had already discussed when explaining how those closest to him help manage the pressure around his Formula 1 career.
Speaking after his Spanish Grand Prix victory in Madrid, Antonelli highlighted his father’s particular influence.
“I’m lucky to have some really fantastic people around me,” Kimi Antonelli explained. “I have an incredible team supporting me and a fantastic family.”
“Especially my father, he is the one who helps me keep my feet on the ground. Especially when he sees that, let’s say, I might be losing my way a little, he has no problem telling me off or simply telling me to come back down to earth.”
Antonelli refuses to let 81-point F1 lead change his approach
The championship standings are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Antonelli left Madrid 81 points clear of Russell after another victory, while his Mercedes team-mate has already played down his own chances of returning to the title fight.
Antonelli, however, insists the size of the advantage does not change how he intends to approach the remaining races.
“From my side, as I’ve said many times, I simply try to do my best in every race, trying to drive as fast as I possibly can every time I get into the car,” Antonelli said.
“Then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the year. But I definitely don’t want to overcomplicate things or drive while worrying about the championship or the result. I just drive and give it everything.”

That approach appears to be working. Antonelli has managed to combine his growing championship advantage with an unusually narrow focus on individual weekends, rather than allowing the possibility of becoming world champion to influence how he drives.
His mentality has already attracted praise during his breakthrough campaign, with Vicky Piria among those to highlight Antonelli’s increasingly mature championship mindset following his Madrid success.
For now, however, Antonelli is resisting the temptation to look too far ahead. The championship lead may be substantial and the possibility of a first Formula 1 world title increasingly realistic, but his plan remains deliberately straightforward: drive as quickly as possible, maximise every Grand Prix and leave the mathematics for later.
